After years of speculation, Apple has officially launched AirTag 2, bringing meaningful upgrades to its popular item tracker. The new model focuses on better tracking accuracy, improved safety features, and environmental responsibility. Apple released the device on Monday, marking the first major update since the original AirTag debuted in 2021.

Longer Tracking Range With New Ultra Wideband Chip

Most notably, AirTag 2 uses Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. Previously, Precision Finding worked up to about 15 meters. Now, the range extends to roughly 60 meters, or nearly 200 feet. As a result, users can locate lost items more easily, even in outdoor or unfamiliar spaces.

Additionally, upgraded Bluetooth improves background tracking through the Find My network. Users can now rely on visual, audio, and haptic feedback for faster recovery. Furthermore, AirTag 2 integrates with Apple Watch Series 9 and later, allowing wrist-based tracking support.

Louder Speaker and Enhanced Safety Protections

Apple has redesigned the internal speaker, making it around 50 percent louder than the first generation. This change helps users hear alerts from farther away. More importantly, it strengthens Apple’s anti-stalking protections.

In addition, Apple introduced new security measures to reduce misuse. These include frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers and cross-platform alerts for unwanted tracking. All Find My communications remain end-to-end encrypted, and AirTag does not store location history on the device itself.

Designed With Sustainability in Mind

Beyond performance, Apple also improved AirTag 2’s environmental footprint. The new tracker uses 85 percent recycled plastic in its enclosure. Moreover, Apple included 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in magnets and recycled gold in circuit boards. These changes align with Apple’s broader 2030 carbon-neutral goals.

Pricing and Availability

Despite the upgrades, Apple kept pricing unchanged. A single AirTag still costs $29, while a four-pack sells for $99. Importantly, the physical design remains the same. Therefore, existing accessories like keychains and luggage tags remain compatible.

Overall, AirTag 2 builds on its predecessor with practical improvements. While it looks familiar, its extended range, louder alerts, and stronger safety features make it a meaningful upgrade for everyday users.
