Apple has strengthened its grip on the global smartphone market in 2025. New data from Counterpoint Research shows that the iPhone 16 ranked as the world’s best-selling smartphone of the year. Even more striking, Apple secured seven of the top ten best-selling phones, leaving only three spots for competitors.
This performance highlights Apple’s continued appeal across both premium and entry-level segments. While Android rivals remain competitive, Apple’s lineup clearly resonated with buyers worldwide.

Strong Showing Across Premium and Standard Models
Beyond the standard iPhone 16, Apple’s higher-end devices also performed well. The iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro ranked second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, Apple’s newer iPhone 17 Pro Max reached fourth place, showing early momentum despite launching later in the year.
Analysts noted that the iPhone 17 series benefited from meaningful upgrades. These included more RAM, higher base storage, and ProMotion displays reaching non-Pro models for the first time. As a result, users gained premium features at a lower price point.
Budget iPhones Expand Apple’s Reach
Apple’s success did not rely solely on flagship devices. The iPhone 16e, priced lower than most premium phones, still reached tenth place. According to the report, strong demand in markets like the United States and Japan drove its performance.
Because of this balance between affordability and modern features, Apple attracted buyers who might otherwise choose budget Android models. This strategy continues to expand Apple’s reach without diluting its brand.
Samsung Competes, but Apple Dominates
Samsung remained Apple’s closest rival, placing three phones in the top ten. However, only one of those devices, the Galaxy S25 Ultra, ranked as a premium model. The rest were budget-focused options. In contrast, Apple dominated both premium and mainstream categories.
Although Apple does not release official unit sales figures, analysts agree that its market leadership remains strong. Overall, the data suggests that consumers continue to favor iPhones for performance, longevity, and ecosystem benefits.
A Clear Signal for the Smartphone Market
Looking ahead, Apple’s strong 2025 showing signals continued momentum. With future models already generating interest, Apple appears well positioned to maintain its leadership in the years to come.
