Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone may finally make its debut this year. However, customers eager to buy the device might face a long wait after its official announcement. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could unveil the iPhone Fold in September alongside the iPhone 18 lineup but postpone widespread availability due to limited supply.
The situation mirrors Apple’s launch of the iPhone X in 2017. That model debuted in September but did not reach stores until November because of manufacturing challenges.
Production Numbers Raise Concerns
Supply chain estimates suggest Apple plans to produce between seven and eight million foldable iPhones during the second half of 2026. However, only around 500,000 to one million units may roll off production lines during the third quarter.
By comparison, Apple is expected to manufacture about 20 million units of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max over the same period. The lower production numbers could make the iPhone Fold difficult to find immediately after launch.
As a result, some customers may need to wait months before getting their hands on Apple’s first foldable device.
New Technology Creates New Challenges
The reported delays appear linked to the complexity of the product itself. The iPhone Fold is expected to feature advanced technologies, including a folding display and a specially designed hinge. Industry reports have repeatedly pointed to the hinge mechanism as one of the biggest engineering hurdles.
Apple faced similar issues with the iPhone X. That smartphone introduced several groundbreaking features, including an edge-to-edge OLED display and Face ID, which initially slowed production.
Therefore, many industry watchers believe history could repeat itself with the company’s first foldable phone.
High Expectations for Apple’s Foldable Future
Despite the possible delays, interest in the iPhone Fold remains strong. Apple has spent years refining its approach to foldable technology, and many consumers expect the device to bring the company’s signature design and software experience to a new category.
Ming-Chi Kuo’s supply chain reports have often proven reliable, giving added weight to the latest predictions.
If the forecasts are accurate, Apple fans may get their first look at the iPhone Fold this September. However, securing one before 2027 could prove much more difficult than expected.
