Apple has released a new developer beta firmware for its latest AirPods lineup. The update prepares the wireless earbuds for new features arriving with iOS 27 and Apple’s other next-generation operating systems.
The beta firmware carries build number 9A5314b. It supports the AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2. However, only registered developers can install it at this stage.
Apple regularly updates accessory firmware before launching major software releases. This approach helps ensure that new hardware features work smoothly when the final operating systems arrive.
How Developers Can Install It
Developers must pair their AirPods with a compatible Apple device before installing the beta firmware. The host device must run iOS 26 or later, iPadOS 26 or later, or macOS 26 or later.
After enabling beta firmware in the AirPods settings, the installation happens automatically. The AirPods must remain within range of the paired device while charging.
New Features Coming to AirPods
Although Apple has not published detailed release notes, the firmware clearly supports several upcoming iOS 27 features. One noticeable change is a redesigned AirPods settings page. It includes cleaner labels and a more organized layout that matches other parts of the Settings app.

Another improvement benefits Apple Watch owners. They will gain the ability to locate missing AirPods Pro earbuds using the Find My app. In addition, AirPods Pro 3 will synchronize heart rate data with compatible GymKit exercise equipment.
