OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s desktop capabilities with support for Apple Messages on Mac. The new integration lets eligible users search conversations, review discussions, draft replies, and send messages.
The feature is available through the Apple Messages plugin in ChatGPT Work and Codex on desktop, according to the attached report. OpenAI’s current documentation also confirms support on Apple silicon Macs for iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations.

ChatGPT Can Search and Draft Messages
The integration aims to reduce the time users spend searching through long conversations. For example, ChatGPT can locate information in Messages and help users catch up on active threads. It can also prepare replies based on the conversation.
Moreover, the feature can send messages when users grant the required permissions. OpenAI says ChatGPT asks users to approve the message and recipients before sending by default.
However, the attached report notes that OpenAI’s demonstration shows an “Always allow sending to this chat” option. Therefore, users may have additional permission choices depending on their setup.
Privacy Becomes a Key Question
The feature also raises important privacy considerations because personal message histories can contain sensitive information.
According to the report, OpenAI said the plugin works only when users choose to activate it. It also states that processing occurs on the device and that the feature does not create an index of users’ messages.
Still, users must grant access for the integration to search their on-device Messages history. As a result, people should review permissions carefully before connecting private conversations to an AI tool.
OpenAI’s broader plugin guidance similarly recommends reviewing an app’s capabilities, permissions, privacy policy, and action controls before enabling access to sensitive systems.
Mac-Only Support for Now
The integration currently focuses on Mac rather than iPhone. The attached report says the feature relies on AppleScript and macOS Accessibility capabilities to perform its tasks.
Ultimately, Apple Messages support gives ChatGPT another practical role on the desktop. Yet its usefulness will depend on how comfortable users feel granting AI access to personal conversations.
