Apple could refresh the iMac before the end of 2026, bringing its next-generation M6 chip to the colorful desktop computer. However, buyers expecting a dramatic redesign may have to wait longer.
According to the attached report, M6-powered iMac models are close to launch and could reach consumers before year-end. The update would place the iMac among the first Macs to move into Apple’s M6 generation.
M6 iMac May Keep Its Current Look
Although the processor could change significantly, the exterior may remain familiar. The report says the M6 iMac should largely resemble the current M4 generation. However, Apple could introduce changes to the available color choices.
Apple introduced the current slim iMac design with the M1 model in 2021. Therefore, the basic appearance would enter its fifth year without a major overhaul.
Meanwhile, rumors of an OLED iMac continue to circulate. Still, the report indicates that such a model remains some distance from release.
M6 Could Have an Unusually Short Life
More interestingly, Apple’s M6 generation may serve as a brief transition between chip families. The report says earlier speculation suggested the M6 could remain current for only about six months.
Apple may also limit the generation to the standard M6 processor. As a result, M6 Pro, Max, and Ultra variants might never reach the market. Instead, Apple could move to the M7 generation during the first half of 2027.
Performance Still Looks Promising
Despite its potentially short lifespan, the M6 could deliver meaningful improvements. The report points to memory bandwidth reaching 200GB per second, a new memory architecture, and a 12-core GPU.
However, the M7 could deliver a larger leap, particularly in artificial intelligence processing. That possibility makes the rumored M6 iMac an unusual upgrade.
For consumers who need a new all-in-one Mac soon, the M6 model could offer stronger performance without changing a proven design. However, buyers seeking a major redesign or OLED display may have more reason to wait.
