Apple could bring ceramic back to its smartwatch lineup with the upcoming Apple Watch Series 12. New reports suggest the company has tested two premium ceramic finishes ahead of its expected 2026 refresh.
The rumored options would give buyers a more luxurious alternative to standard Apple Watch materials. However, Apple has not officially confirmed either finish, so the details remain subject to change.

White and Dark Gray Ceramic Options Tested
According to the report, Apple has experimented with both white and dark gray ceramic cases for the Series 12. Internally, the company reportedly uses the name “iceman” for the ceramic case style.
Ceramic would mark a notable return for Apple’s wearable lineup. The company previously offered the material on selected Apple Watch models, including the Series 5 shown on page one of the document.
Meanwhile, Apple may introduce additional band colors and configurations across other versions. Still, customers expecting a dramatic redesign could be disappointed. The report says Apple does not plan a major visual overhaul this year.
Instead, a more substantial design change could arrive in 2027 or possibly slip into 2028.
Health Tracking Could Become More Continuous
Beyond materials, Apple is reportedly exploring changes to health monitoring. One test involves allowing the heart-rate sensor to collect data continuously throughout the day. Currently, the watch takes background readings at intervals and increases monitoring during intensive activity.
In addition, Apple could expand the wellness information shown through its fitness and health software. The report compares the possible approach with health-focused wearables from Whoop and Oura. However, it remains unclear whether these changes will arrive with Series 12.
September Event Could Reveal the Details
Apple is expected to unveil a new Apple Watch at its September 9 “Surprise and shine” event. Therefore, buyers may not have long to wait for confirmation of the ceramic models.
Preorder timing also remains uncertain. Reports suggest Apple could open orders on Saturday rather than its usual Friday schedule.
For now, ceramic stands out as one of the most interesting rumored upgrades. If Apple proceeds, Series 12 could offer a more premium look without requiring a complete redesign.
