Apple has moved three Intel-powered MacBook models to its obsolete list, ending official hardware support for the aging laptops. The change affects machines released in 2017 and 2018, leaving owners dependent on third-party repair services.
The move highlights the steady decline of Intel Macs as newer Apple Silicon computers take a larger role in the Mac lineup.
Three MacBook Models Lose Support
The first affected device is the 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2017 with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Its latest compatible operating system is macOS Ventura, which launched in 2022.
Meanwhile, the 2018 Retina MacBook Air has also reached obsolete status. That model can run up to macOS Sonoma. As a result, it already sits two major macOS releases behind the current version cited in the report.
Finally, the 13-inch 2018 MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports joins the list. It supports macOS Sequoia as its newest operating system, one release behind macOS Tahoe.
What Apple’s Obsolete Status Means
Apple uses specific time periods to classify older hardware. A product becomes “vintage” after the company stopped distributing it for more than five years but less than seven.
However, once that period passes seven years, Apple considers the product obsolete. The company can provide parts and service for vintage devices for up to seven years, subject to parts availability.
Therefore, owners of these newly obsolete MacBooks can no longer rely on Apple for standard hardware repairs. Instead, they will need to seek help from independent repair providers.
Intel Mac Era Continues to Fade
The decision marks another milestone in Apple’s long-running move away from Intel processors. Although these MacBooks can still function, limited software support and unavailable official repairs reduce their practical lifespan.
For owners, the choice now depends on the laptop’s condition and repair cost. A minor third-party repair may keep a machine running. However, an expensive hardware failure could make upgrading to a newer Mac the more practical option.
