Apple TV has added an unusual sci-fi disaster thriller to its growing film slate. Waffle House Index turns a familiar symbol of disaster resilience into the setting for an increasingly chaotic night.

The story follows a Waffle House waitress trying to survive a night shift as one crisis follows another. First comes an armed man, followed by flooding and killer crocodiles. Then, the danger grows dramatically with nuclear explosions and an alien threat.

Inde Navarrette Takes the Lead

Inde Navarrette will star in the film after appearing as Nikki Freeman in the horror movie Obsession. Moreover, Waffle House Index will mark her first project as an executive producer.

The screenplay had already gained attention before Apple TV secured the project. It appeared on the 2025 Black List, an annual survey highlighting popular unproduced screenplays. According to the report, the acquisition reached seven figures.

Therefore, the deal gives Apple TV a high-concept film with an unusual mix of disaster action, science fiction, and survival drama.

What Is the Waffle House Index?

The title draws inspiration from the so-called Waffle House Index. The informal measure uses the restaurant chain’s ability to operate during severe weather as an indicator of local conditions.

A green level means a restaurant has power and can serve its full menu. Meanwhile, yellow signals more difficult conditions. Power may be unavailable or supplied by a generator, while food shortages can force a limited menu.

Red represents the most serious situation. At that level, severe or critical damage forces the restaurant to close.

A Disaster Story With an Unusual Twist

By building its premise around this cultural reference, Waffle House Index gives the traditional disaster movie a distinctive setting. Moreover, its escalating threats suggest the film will push the idea far beyond ordinary storms.

For now, the source does not provide a production schedule or release date. Still, the seven-figure acquisition signals a significant commitment to the project and adds another original genre film to Apple TV’s future lineup.
