Apple has revealed how its engineers tackled one of the biggest challenges facing foldable smartphones: heat management. The iPhone Duo combines a slim design with advanced cooling technology to support demanding tasks.

In an interview with PCMag, Apple engineers Dan Murray and Banafsheh Barabadi explained the innovations behind the device. Their approach combines chip packaging, improved materials, and a redesigned cooling system.

A20 Pro Chip Gets a Smarter Design

Apple changed how the A20 Pro processor connects with its memory to improve thermal efficiency.

Previously, Apple stacked memory above the processor to conserve space. However, the company now places DRAM beside the chip using wafer-level multichip module technology.

This arrangement allows heat to spread more effectively while maintaining fast communication between components.

Moreover, the design takes inspiration from Apple’s M-series chips, which use more flexible packaging arrangements.

As a result, the processor gains a more direct connection to the cooling system.

Four Innovations Improve Cooling Performance

Apple developed four key technologies to manage heat inside the iPhone Duo.

First, the redesigned chip layout creates a direct thermal path from the processor to the vapor chamber.

Second, Apple introduced a metal-over-foam material that improves heat transfer while allowing mechanical flexibility.

Third, engineers expanded the vapor chamber to three times its previous surface area. They also increased its deionized water content to improve cooling.

Additionally, the chamber supports major internal components, including the battery and logic board.

Finally, Apple added a copper-based metal plate behind the foldable display. Together with a graphite layer, this material spreads heat more evenly and reduces hotspots.

Innovative Hinge Helps Balance Temperatures

The iPhone Duo’s folding design creates another challenge because its two halves must share heat effectively.

Therefore, Apple developed a flexible graphite pipe that runs through the hinge.

This component transfers heat between both sides, helping maintain more consistent temperatures. It also increases the available surface area for cooling.

However, engineers needed to ensure the flexible material could withstand thousands of folding cycles.

Apple’s thermal and mechanical teams worked together to address this durability challenge.

Ultimately, these innovations demonstrate how Apple balanced thin construction, structural strength, and thermal performance.

The improvements aim to help the iPhone Duo maintain powerful performance without compromising its distinctive folding design.
