Apple has confirmed that its new four-speaker HomePod surround sound system will only work with the latest Apple TV 4K.
The feature promises a more immersive home theater experience. However, Apple has introduced strict hardware requirements that limit compatibility with older devices.

According to Apple’s specifications, users need four compatible HomePod speakers and the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K.
Moreover, the streaming device must run the latest operating system software to support the setup.
Apple Confirms HomePod Surround Sound Requirements
Apple’s new surround sound feature supports the HomePod mini 2 and second-generation HomePod.
However, users must arrange four speakers in matching front and rear pairs.
For example, customers can use two full-size HomePods at the front and two compatible HomePod mini speakers at the rear.
Alternatively, they can build a system using four matching HomePod mini 2 speakers.
Additionally, Apple continues supporting traditional listening options, including individual speakers, stereo pairs, and multiroom audio.
The four-speaker arrangement represents Apple’s most advanced HomePod home theater configuration.
Nevertheless, owners of older Apple TV 4K models cannot access this new surround sound feature.
HomePod Surround Sound Comes With Higher Costs
Apple’s hardware restrictions could make the new system expensive for some customers.
The HomePod mini 2 costs $149 per speaker, bringing a four-speaker setup to $596.
Meanwhile, combining two full-size second-generation HomePods with two HomePod mini speakers raises the speaker cost to approximately $1,000.
Choosing four full-size HomePods increases that figure to around $1,400.
Furthermore, customers must purchase the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, which costs approximately $300.
As a result, the complete home theater system represents a significant investment.
HomePod Mini 2 Release Date and Availability
Apple has opened preorders for the HomePod mini 2 ahead of its October 30, 2026, release.
Customers can choose from five colors: pink, green, blue, white, and midnight.
Additionally, the new speakers support flexible listening arrangements beyond the four-speaker surround sound configuration.
However, customers planning a home theater upgrade should check their existing Apple TV and HomePod models before purchasing additional hardware.
Ultimately, Apple’s latest audio feature offers a more ambitious home entertainment experience, but its compatibility requirements may limit adoption among existing users.
