Apple is expanding its new Sound Glow feature beyond the HomePod mini 2, bringing colorful lighting effects to older smart speakers.
The update arrives through the HomePod Software 27.2 release candidate, extending support to the HomePod 2 and original HomePod mini.

Sound Glow creates colorful lighting effects that respond to music and other audio.
Additionally, the feature makes compatible HomePod speakers more visually engaging during playback.
The expansion means existing HomePod owners can enjoy the lighting effects without purchasing Apple’s newest smart speaker.
Sound Glow Adds Color to Music Playback
Sound Glow uses the illuminated surface on top of compatible HomePod speakers to display changing colors.
As music plays, the lighting pulses in response to the audio, creating a more interactive listening experience.
Meanwhile, Apple continues improving its smart speaker lineup through software updates and hardware upgrades.
The company introduced the HomePod mini 2 during its October 13 “Welcome Home” event.
Although Sound Glow adds visual appeal, the newer speaker’s major improvements include enhanced Siri AI capabilities and surround sound support.
Consequently, customers seeking advanced audio features may still benefit from upgrading their devices.
Apple TV 4K Introduces Surround Sound Support
Apple is also introducing new surround sound capabilities through tvOS 27.2 and its latest Apple TV 4K.
The updated streaming device supports several HomePod speaker combinations for a more immersive entertainment experience.
For example, users can connect four HomePod mini 2 speakers to create a surround sound setup.
Alternatively, they can use four HomePod 2 speakers or combine two HomePod mini 2 units with two HomePod 2 speakers.
However, the original HomePod and HomePod mini do not support these new surround sound configurations.
New Apple TV 4K Arrives in November
The 2026 Apple TV 4K is scheduled to reach customers on November 13.
Priced at $300, the device features Apple’s A19 processor and improved Siri AI capabilities.
Furthermore, far-field microphones support echo cancellation, helping improve voice interactions.
Apple has already included code for the new audio features in the tvOS 27.2 release candidate.
Meanwhile, existing HomePod users can look forward to expanded lighting functionality through the upcoming software update.
Ultimately, these improvements strengthen Apple’s connected home ecosystem by combining smarter voice controls, enhanced audio, and interactive lighting.
