Apple may introduce significant changes to its next-generation foldable iPhone, including advanced facial recognition and additional physical controls.
According to a report published on October 22, 2026, the upcoming iPhone Duo 2 could feature Face ID beneath its display.

Furthermore, Apple is reportedly exploring the return of the Action Button, which the original iPhone Duo lacks.
Although Apple has not confirmed these plans, the potential upgrades suggest a stronger focus on convenience and security.
Under-Display Face ID Could Transform the Design
The original iPhone Duo introduced Apple’s first under-display camera system. However, it does not include Face ID, a familiar security feature on other iPhones.
Now, Apple reportedly wants to address that limitation without adding a visible notch or display cutout.
The proposed technology would place facial recognition sensors beneath the screen while preserving a clean appearance.
According to technology journalist Mark Gurman, Apple plans to position Face ID on the device’s outer display.
Consequently, users could unlock their phones through facial recognition without opening the foldable screen.
However, the report does not suggest that Apple will introduce Face ID on both displays.
Could the Action Button Make a Comeback?
Apple is also reportedly testing the possibility of restoring the Action Button.
The company removed this exterior control from the original iPhone Duo, making it a notable omission.
The button provides customizable shortcuts on supported iPhones, allowing users to access selected functions quickly.
However, adding another physical control to a foldable device could present design challenges.
Despite these limitations, Apple appears interested in exploring whether the feature can fit into the next model.
Apple Continues Testing Future Foldable Features
Reports suggest Apple has already begun internally testing versions of the iPhone Duo 2.
However, it remains unclear whether these prototypes include the proposed facial recognition system or Action Button.
Meanwhile, the current iPhone Duo supports video calls through two selfie cameras, allowing users to communicate with the device open or closed.
The possible introduction of Face ID would add another important capability to the foldable design.
Ultimately, these reported changes could make Apple’s next foldable iPhone more practical and competitive.
Nevertheless, both features remain unconfirmed, and Apple could revise its plans before the device reaches consumers.
