1 GB limit got you down? Roll your own .Mac server then. We're really close to figuring out the XMLRPC transactions for Backup 3. My 'iDisk' has over a 100 GB free and is only one hop of 1000BaseT away. :-) http://www.tnpi.biz/support/forums/index.php?t=i&cat=9&rid=2
October 02 2005 at 1:20 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe part about .Mac that I'm unhappy with is my inability to really use the webspace. Let me point my own domain name at it, run php/cgi, etc. For the cost, I would like it to be equivalent to a modest size hosting service. I'm not looking for huge amounts of bandwidth, just something that isn't locked down to a dumb URL and static pages... Let me install wordpress on it, or offer similar blog hosting (your choice of blog software) and for low-traffic blogs, .Mac hosting would be an excellent complement. Naturally if an individual's blog traffic necessitated more hosting space or bandwidth, they'd sell upgraded services. Silly Apple. As if I want to give my .Mac username to anyone who wants to see my website. http://hompage.mac.com/spammeplease == spammeplease@mac.com

If Apple really believes that their computers are the center of a media hub, then why don't they give you enough ROOM to actually back up things like your iPhoto and iTunes libraries?!? Does Backup even let you create offline backups with Firewire/USB drives, CD/DVD media, etc?

September 30 2005 at 3:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI would love to use Backup 3 but I have no need for the full .mac services. Apple should offer a Backup 3 standalone purchase for $50 or something in that range so people that have no need for .mac can still use Backup 3 with external hard drives or CD/DVD burners. I would hate to pay $99 every year just to use backup 3. I know apple is really pusing .mac but until they bring the price down or start offering services to justify the price, I just don't see the masses leaving their current webmail/host. I konw I can still use Backup 3 in Trial mode but 100mb just doesn't cut the mustard.
