Apple has decided to show the EDU market even more love and has unveiled a slimmed-down 17-inch iMac for all y'all eating reheated Ramen noodles for breakfast in your dorm room right now. This model sells for a mere $899 (down from $1199 for the next model up) and includes a 1.83 Intel Core Duo CPU, as well as the typica 1440 x 900 resolution. However, the main specs that took a step down from the base retail version are a Combo drive, an 80GB Serial ATA hard drive and an Intel GMA 950 graphics with 64MB of shared memory, instead of the Radeon X1600 in the other retail versions.
Students and EDU sys admins who have been pinching pennies can rejoice, for this model is shipping within 1-3 business days.

Is it just me or are they labeling the processor configurations differently, showing that there is only one processor in the machine:
"1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor (1)"

Nice. I wonder if Apple will lower the price on the Mac mini as it The seems a expensive now. We'll have to wait and see.

Dur.... the (1) is referring to the note at the bottom of the page labelled (1):
1. The iMac continuously monitors system thermal and power conditions, and may adjust processor speed as needed to maintain optimal system operation.

Looks like you also lose Bluetooth and the Apple Remote. But still a great deal... $899 is a lot easier to cobble together on my grad student budget.

This is basically a Mac mini configuration in the 17" iMac form factor including the 17" monitor. How much cheaper would it be to buy a mac mini at the discounted education price and a separate 17" TFT display?
I think it's good for schools. I'd like to be able to buy one for my family at that price over here in the UK, unfortunately we get stuffed on the exchange rate, shipping to the UK and 17.5% VAT on top.

Matt B, dude, for 200 extra dollars you get a 17 inch display and 1.83 instead of 1.67, and a keyboard/mouse. I think that's awesome, even considering the loss of superdrive and bluetooth.
