iTunes icon history

Not much to say about this, other than check it out: A Macteens gallery member posted a pictorial history of Apple's iTunes icons, starting from the wonky multi-note CD to the slick blue one gracing us now. Most of us remember these icons pretty well, but it's cool to be able to analyze the subtle differences in each (i.e., how the CDs get more pronounced with each iteration).

The restyled iTunes 7 logo is butt-ugly IMHO. I'm seriously considering removing it from my Dock to keep my Camino and Transmit icons from becoming infected with Ugly Disease.

That's a good point. Maybe they should replace it with an LP.

Or a wax cylinder.

Amazing timeline. No, really.

One commenter mentioned that the CD is getting more vertical. True. I bet the CD disappears completely in the next version and is replaced by some ol' circle.

Think about it - iTunes is hardly about playing CDs anymore. It suely was back in the olden days of 1.0 and 2.0, but who plays a CD in iTunes anymore? Usually it's only in there long enough to rip.

If there is a point to the iPod/iTunes digital music combo, it's that CDs aren't necessary. Yet the icon still prominently displays one. I bet it's gone soon.

Well, we've definitely lost to the advertising industry on this one, :P.

BTW, someone should make an icon pack for these old iTunes versions... unless it already exists and I'm dumb.

The ad is less distracting if you blow it up in the center of the screen. Then you're just focusing :)
