Gig of RAM standard on MacBook Pro
Dan pointed out some nice tidbits about the new MacBook Pros, but he didn't mention something that I just noticed while perusing the MacBook Pro site. The base model (2.16 Ghz core 2 Duo, 15 inch) comes with one gig of RAM standard. This is up from 512 MB. The other two models come with 2 gigs of RAM.Kudos to Apple for finally shipping portables with a decent amount of RAM in them from the get go.

Here's what I want to know. With those of us stuck with Macbook pro running that old legacy intel chip :-) can we bump to 3 gig's ?

You can find a 2GB stick from a reputable manufacturer for ~$200. That's I wish they would let me get the 15" MBP with the better video card but the 1GB of ram so I could buy the extra 2GB stick myself.

I'm planning on picking up the mid-level model as soons as they get them in inventory at the local store, so I have that one on the brain.

UM....Take a look at the specs again. It looks like the MBPs that come with 2GB have to 1GB DIMMs. You can order a 2GB DIMM to replace one of them to bump it up to 3GB, so 2GB DIMMs are available. But they don't come standard on the two upper level models of MBPs.
You can get a Dell with 4GB RAM. The processor can only address 3GB, with the other 1GB going to other things. Don't quote me on that second part, though.
October 26 2006 at 10:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's the limitation of the Intel chipset. The next generation chip will not have this lower limit.
Either way, the high cost of a 2GB chip and the fact that most people don't need 3GB RAM, much less 4GB, means that it's really nothing to be concerned with.
Will someone explain why you can order 3 gigs of ram (one two gig chip and one one gig chip). But you can not order a MBP with 4 gigs of ram?
