Apple releases faster MacBooks
It looks like the rumors were true, as Apple released updated MacBooks earlier today. The white model now comes in a 2.0 GHz ($1,099US) or 2.16 GHz ($1,299US) configuration, and the black 'Book clocks in at 2.16 GHz ($1,499US). All models feature Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 1GB of memory standard and larger hard drives - up to 200GB (The factory hard drive sizes are 80GB, 120GB and 160GB, respectively).Woo-hoo! New MacBooks!

Many times Apple seems to move slower than we wish, i too thought the Santa Rosa chipset would be included, but it isn't really that much of an upgrade anyway. i am glad the prices still seem fair (not increased) and the hard drives go up to 200 gigs. Not bad for a little laptop, not all that much reason to buy a new one either. C'mon Leopard!

And each of them are £50 cheaper than before in the UK. Not bad at all!

Trish you should be able to return it for a new model, apple has a great return policy when they release new products.

"4. And my black MacBook just arrived a week ago. Sigh." well you have another week in which to return it if you bought it at an apple store

But the Apple Store is down... again! It might be that they are bumping up the Macbook Pros as well - maybe Santa Rosa?

Store was briefly up (still down, they must have really goofed something up trying to update this as the configuration links weren't there and no options to actually buy)... captured a screen shot of the front page of the educational Apple store (from work (H/D)ell computer) for Emory showing the starting $999 pricing for MacBooks (the educational price, unless they goofed it up).
Here's the screenshot...

Wow, what a lame update to the Macbook lineup. About 100MHz, a little RAM and a little HD capacity. No Santa Rosa, and the base config still is only a combo drive. (What is this, 2004? You can buy peecee laptops for hundreds less with DVD burning capability.)
If today's Macbook refresh had been with Santa Rosa, I might have gotten it (instead of Macbook Pro later). Hopefully, the Macbook Pro update is more impressive.
The iPhone is gutting Apple's capacity to create competetive computer hardware products. The iPhone better be a *significantly* more profitable product than the iPod! After all, iPod development never delayed a major OS or hardware release...

wow thad, its a good job apple knows its customer base better than you, dvd burning is generally the least needed thing for 90% of people, pc laptops that are that cheaper dont have c2d, gb ram, webcam, slot loader etc

Rossmac, actually I meant that the low end MacBook (the one with the Combo drive)... used to be priced at $1049... now the educational price is $999 (and the upgraded specs are the same as the retail price $1099 one)... so, the educational price of the MacBook drops below $1000 for the first time since the switch to Intel (the low end 12" iBooks ended up at that price if I recall correctly, before the axe). Now, the MacBook (non-pro) discount for education is $100 across the board (used to be $50 for low end and $100 for the higher end models).

Well of course it's boring. That's why there wasn't a huge announcement or event. I *love* that Apple is now doing more and more "boring" continual updates, instead of just huge ones in January and June. If you're not happy about this, go check out the refurbished site! $849 gets you either a 2 GHz Core Duo with a superdrive or a 1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo with a combo drive. $999 gets you a 2 GHz Core 2 with a superdrive and 1 GB RAM or a black 2 GHz Core Duo with 1 GB and a superdrive. Also, silver Shuffles are just $49.
