Rumor: The new iMac keyboard

Our friends at Engadget have posted several photos of what may be the rumored super-slim, aluminum keyboard that will accompany the new iMac. It's very thin indeed, and the keys look like those of a MacBook. I imagine typing on such a thin keyboard would be annoying, but I've never tried it, of course, so who knows.

The strangest feature is the Command key with no Apple logo! What's going on here?

We can't confirm that this is the real deal, so viewer beware.

It feels nice when using but it's a bit hinky when you use the function keys when connected to you MacBook and find that the icons don't match, and that holding the Fn key does nothing thinking it would behave in the same manner as holding the fn key down on the MacBook but NOOOOOoooooo that would be too darn easy..

But for $48 bucks... it's not bad and it's very compact on consumeing tons of my prescious desktop space..

Regardless of all the negative comments, I think it looks stylish.

This is obviously a fake. FAKE FAKE FAKE.

i edited the levels in Photoshop and you can see the compositing that was done.

Notice the symbol on the option key is gone... that seems really stupid.

Looks like a fake to me. The open apple is iconic to the Apple keyboard. It's been around since the Apple II. Also, I don't see why Exposé and Dashboard have been given icons on the keys, as a lot of people like to reroute them.

Aaron: The cloverleaf symbol was introduced in the Macintosh, due to Jobs' annoyance at the Apple logo being in every menu.

Apple has almost always made horrible keyboards. Of the six Macs I have owned over 20 years, the best keyboard was on a PB1400. On all the rest I replaced the KB with third party, most recently MacAlley. I have ordered a Matias Tactile Pro 2.0 USB Keyboard for my current iMac.

I have not used every KB Apple has made so they may have made a good one. Good typists have problems with Apple KBs. I don't have high hopes for the new iMac keyboard. I plan to buy one of the new iMacs and probably get a Matias Tactile Pro 2.

I think Steve Jobs and J. Ives type with two fingers and a thumb or maybe just two thumbs.

The Apple logo on the Command key was added only when they started using the same keyboard for the Apple IIgs as the Mac -- the Apple IIgs had the Apple keys. Prior to that, it just had the cloverleaf "feature" symbol.

Typing this on a MacBook, I can only say that I like the style of the keys and I hope Apple goes with a design like this. My MacBook's keys are so nice and comfortable to type on - I just wish they were ergonomic.

That being said, I highly doubt that the picture is real. Looks too much like a Photoshop job (like Engadget alluded to) or a very well done hobbyist's hackjob with a couple of white MacBook keyboards and a slab of aluminum. The thickness of that keyboard just looks impossible to me.
