Apple announces new iMacs with aluminum enclosure, glass displays

Well the rumors that date all the way back to May were true - today Apple announced a redesigned, cheaper iMac and the loss of the 17-inch model. Let us all take a moment of silence for our fallen comrade.

Now that that's over, let's get to the good stuff. The new iMac tosses aside the old 'n busted plastic and LCD design for two of Apple's increasingly favorite materials: aluminum and glass (Exhibit A: the iPhone). Steve says customers absolutely love the glass and glossy displays, so the new iMac now continues the trend. With the loss of the 17-inch, however, the lineup has been slimmed down to two primary model sizes: a 20-inch now starting at $1199, and a 24-inch at $1799. For their respective sizes, this is a price drop of $200 across the board, but this now means that the barrier to entry for the iMac lineup has actually risen by $200.

The new models, their features and prices are as follows:
  • 20-inch introductory iMac: 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 250 GB SATA Hard Drive, 8x SuperDrive, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT video card - $1199
  • 20-inch mid-level iMac: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 320 GB SATA Hard Drive, 8x SuperDrive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro video card - $1499
  • 24-inch top line iMac: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB RAM, 320 GB SATA Hard Drive, 8x SuperDrive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro video card - $1799
[Update: Wow, now that I can finally get into the store (barely), I can confirm commenters are right: there is a 4th iMac at the top of the line offering a 24-inch display, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM and a 500GB SATA Hard Drive for $2299.]

All new iMacs feature that fancy, 0.33-inch keyboard that was leaked not long ago, and all models are available and shipping immediately. Ladies and gentlemen, you may now let the credit cards fly!

I can't abide glossy screens, they are such a step back. I was waiting to see the new iMac but as it is I'm tempted now to run out and but an old iMac.

I took a look at the Glossy imac Displays last night at an Apple Store. No thanks. To see you image and all of the lights in the background of the display would really tire the old eyes after time.

apple store in SF has the new iMacs in. they look great! sadly the magnetic side that used to store your apple remote is no longer there. i had an apple employee test it out and no dice on either side or bottom.

To #29 I was gonna ask the same thing. Where is the power light? I know the power button is now on the right side of the back. Maybe the Apple logo will glow? Who knows? Maybe the power indicator will glow thru the black border like the iSight cam.

Thoughts?

I have a serious situation here.

For my work, I was tasked to acquire an iMac last week (Thursday to be exact). Not knowing the product cycle, I purchased a 24" iMac (of the now previous generation) at Apple's store. Added a gig of ram to bring it up to 2GB total (had them install it)

This morning, I was dismayed to see the new 24" model, which costs pretty much what I paid for the iMac, but comes with 2.8ghz Core 2 Duo Extreme, 2x the hard drive, and better GPU.

It's not my money, but I am furious. Clearly the Apple store had these new units in the back, or were very clearly aware of its existence. Nobody made an effort to clue me in. While it's good business for them (clearing out old stock), it has soured me on the entire deal.

Anybody have any experience with returns? I'm still within my 14 day period, but with the RAM upgrade, would they still honor the 10% restocking fee? (An insult on its own really)

was anyone expecting/hoping the new iMacs would use LED displays instead of LCDs?

so, maybe in January = unified color scheme, LED, choice of matte/glossy, better GPU, and 45nm Penryn chips...?

Hmm, silver iMac, black accents, silver keyboard, white accents, white mouse... Looks like a hodgepodge of different manufacturers rather than the product of a consistent design idea. Really wish those Logitech diNove Edge keyboards worked with Mac. It might look sweet with the new iMac and a non-Apple black mouse.

I wonder where the sleep indicator light is, or if there is one.
