Apple paranoia in action
I'm doing screenshots today and I snap a photo of the iPhone video application. Notice anything missing? Like the actual video? What kind of paranoia prevents a screenshots application from photographing video on a platform that shouldn't be doing snapshots in the first place because it's not set up for third party interaction?
Thank you Apple.
p.s. I know. I know. It's probably just hardware acceleration.

OT Question: Why is it that when I do 'compare' for the new ipods in the Apple store they all have different specs for the same storage capacity?
Take a look at the iPod nano (the squat one) at 8GB and the iPod touch at 8GB. The nano claims 2000 song capacity and the touch claims 1750. Fine -- OS overhead I'm sure. Except for photos the nano claims 7000 and the touch claims 10000... despite being twice the screen resolution??
Likewise the nano has 8 hours of video and the touch has 10 with the same 8GB. This is the UK store I'm looking at here.

Pete-
As far as the photo thing, I think that it's because of the way that the Nano stores photos. It actually has a separate saved thumbnail and full-sized image, because it's not powerful enough to do the image resizing on the fly. Meanwhile, the Touch is, so therefore it needs only the larger file.

why the hostility against the post? She simply posted something that she just found out. You guys are quick to jump on other people and others are quick to follow.

Have you guys considered spinning off all of these technical iPhone posts to a separate Blog? I don't have an iPhone, and I'm not a hacker, and while I don't *mind* seeing a couple of ubergeek iPhone posts per week, I've found myself grumbling about TUAW a bit over the past couple of weeks, and wish you guys did what Slashdot does, which is have one main area, and a "spin off" area for additional news.
Sort of like one of the things that makes Apple better is the features they DON'T include, what could make TUAW better is what they don't post about.
I know there's some RSS feed-thing, but I just want to go to one URL to read about OSX related items, with a *little* additional apple news.
Esp. stories like this which don't say much, and are somewhat sensationalized (saying Apple is "paranoid" in the title, when you know that it's a hardware issue is very... umm... CNN)
Don't get me wrong, I love TUAW, and I enjoy a periodic update about iPHones (can switch cards and run any plan, price drop, installers made easier), but it's just too much...

What makes you people think it's ok to speak to people like that on a blog? You're like animals. I'm embarrassed for all of you.

This post should be titled : "Free unofficial screenshot software doesn't capture every facet of iphone's operations". More wordy, but more importantly - accurate.
And yes, this article is useless and the quality of a blog is determined soley by the quality of the articles. TUAW has gone downhill recently, not to mention the fact that my TUAW rss feed reads more like a 'what happened 3 hours ago on engadget and macrumours' feed.

"The most tragic aspect of Mrs. Sadun's eternal cluelessness is that she seems to be the only authentic Mac user (culturally, spiritually, and literally) among the entire staff of TUAW. This site is pathetic, and I wish it would stop assaulting the Mac community with its continued existence."
Umm Yeah. You clearly do not know what you are talking about. The Folks on this blog are some of the most well versed and astute mac bloggers out there. David Chartifrenchname was just brought on the staff of Ars Apple wing.
Furthermore, Erica is far from clueless. She is extremely gifted technically, and actually quite knowledgable with regard to Apple history.
What I can't support, and this has been mentioned above, is the continued use of disingenuous, flamebaiting, Enquire-esq, titleing. Erica, you've done it in the past, and we've asked you to tone it down. Please consider doing so. I come here becuase it ISNT Enqui-nkSecret.
Thanks,
A loyal reader

Dude, what's with all of the flame posts?!?!?!
Erica is just doing her job of reporting... Many people, including myself, are still a bt miffed at the price drop and we want to squeeze every bit of support out of apple as a result.
Keep up the GREAT work Erica!

well, I for one found Erica's post quite informative. Erica was kind enough to blog her hacking of the iPhone, and I think it's quite funny that Apple squashed the effort. They really should release a proper SDK. Regardless, what's more troubling are the comments in this feedback section:
1. if you want to filter out the iPhone articles, use a newsfeed filter (like Yahoo's)
2. If you don't have anything nice to say, then shut the FU$K UP!
I for one applaud Erica's efforts, hacking is a form of wizardry, and leads to really cool ideas/innovations - how do you think Apple was born? Woz and Steve hacked their way into existence! etc etc.
Erica: Please ignore these idiots; they really need to get a life. Keep up the good work - and I am sure these guys would all change their tune if you somehow managed to get skype working on the iPhone!

Hey TUAW crowd.
There are a bunch of people over at the Google Reader forums, me included, complaining because your feed wont update anymore.
Anyone know anything about this?

@darkg33k
Grow up. You paid the price. Apple guaranteed you nothing price-wise. This argument is old and tired. Go run and whine to the Apple store and get your $100.
Erica, whenever I see a story written by you, I know there's going to be something about it that makes me cringe. It's usually this sort of "fluff" post full of nothing, or a completely inaccurate post altogether. I'm compelled to always read them for a good laugh. How did you get this gig, anyhow? You're clearly the single worst blogger in the company. Step it up or find a new job...preferably one without a need for news and fact-checking.
