It's not often that an application update is announced by the developers with chagrin instead of excitement, but the new 0.9.1 of HandBrake is delivered somewhat sheepishly as it consists mostly of bug fixes. The full list of changes to the DVD-ripping open source tool is below.You can download 0.9.1 now from the HandBrake site. We're chagrined to announce the public release of HandBrake 0.9.1. Why chagrined? Because 0.9.0 wasn't as stable as it should have been, something 0.9.1 rectifies.
This minor update squashes a number of glaring bugs. Most notably, HandBrake will no longer hang at the end of encoding MKV files with chapter markers. This means the Animation, Bedlam, Constant Quality Rate, Deux Six Quatre, Film, and Television presets are now usable.
Additional improvements:
- Impressive performance enhancements
- Significant interface prettification (Mac more than Win)
- Color subtitles now show up in color
- Changing dimensions in Picture Settings no longer causes a crash (Mac)
- Forced subtitle support
- More robust exception handling (Win)
- Closing the main window no longer causes HandBrake to crash (Mac)
- Using "Slow" deinterlacing no longer doubles the chapter count.
- MPEG Stream support is now case-insensitive (.VOB as well as .vob, etc) and more compatible
- No more error messages sent to standard out instead of standard error
- Bigger buffer for the activity log (Mac)
- Proper display of fading subtitles
- On-completion options to shutdown, suspend, etc (Win)
- "Same as source FPS" now works correctly when the end-credits of a progressive film are interlaced.
- Add-to-queue fixed (Win)
- Target size fixed for the umpteenth time (Mac)
...and assorted other changes.

I noticed a nasty bug with chapters being incorrectly read. I was ripping videos from my New Order Collected DVD for my iPod Touch, and many of the videos are preceded by a countdown that had its own chapter. Sometimes the app would crash, sometimes it would record the incorrect part of the video, etc. Very frustrating, and I gave up after Blue Monday '88, which is pretty early on the disc. Any clue on whether or not something like this might be fixed? I won't be home until late this evening to test.

I would love this program, but I can't get it to rip anymore than 1 chapter from any DVD. I'm probably just doing something wrong, so feel free to point that out with a fix.

Handbrake was working great for me UNTIL I updated to 0.9.1, now it rips one chapter and stops, declaring the job as finished. This on both a Macbook pro and a G5 iMac. Crap!!

As a matter of fact, I restored Handbrake Version 0.8.5b1 from my a backup, and it is successfully converting DVDs where 0.9 and 0.9.1 were doing one chapter or less. I am too ignorant to hazard a guess as to why this is. I'm using the HB-iPod preset, no other changes, and 0.8.5b1 is working great. I am also getting a higher frame rate on my G5, with 0.8.5b1. hmmm.

Are you ripping from the DVD directly or from a VIDEO_TS folder? I find Handbrake works better if I use MacTheRipper to get the disc onto my HD, then convert it to the chosen format.

BTW. The HandBrake Dev themself tell you to use MacTheRipper since HandBrakes own rippers is, well, limited. The Windows Version doesn't void any copyright laws since it doesn't handle CSS, in a future Version for Mac OS X CSS support is also going to be dropped.

That's a recent thing cause by some new DRM, from what I understand.

I think they're upset that 1) their program is getting less and less useful (see 1 chapter ripping problem) and 2), well sheesh - it's been in beta forever! Time to get to the ol' 1.0, dudes!
Seriously, though, I kid. You only hurt the ones you love. Handbrake is a great program, and it's cheap as free. Can't ask for more than that.

I love this program and am glad to see the patch. Obviously you have to use a second program to get around copy protection so that you can actually back up your movies, but that's just life. I'm glad this software is available as it has made life much easier for backing up my DVDs. In a sense it's almost directly responsible for my recent surge in DVD purchases because I bought them with the intention of converting them to watch on my iPod touch. =)

I got that one alot, because I "skew" movies and force them to 16:9, so they fill up the whole screen on my AppleTV. Glad to know it wasn't just me and that it's fixed :)

Another advantage of pre-ripping with MacTheRipper is that Handbrake isn't spinning your DVD for hours at a time. I rip to an external drive, then rip with Handbrake to another physical drive. That way there's no competition between reading and writing. As my G5 takes about 18 hours to rip a movie at high-quality settings, I wouldn't want my DVD to spin for that long. I'm worried about warping it. It's also noisy.

Hmmm, interesting about ripping & Handbraking to different physical drives. Hadn't thought about that.
My Quad-Core G5 takes a little less than real time to Handbrake a DVD at AppleTV quality. (just under 2 hours for a 2 hour movie)
And yes, ripping them first and Handbraking in a batch is the way to go - gives me around 6 or 8 converted movies over-night that way.
I've got over 100 movies on my AppleTV and love it!
Of course, the HOLY GRAIL is to be able to use a single high-quality/small-sized video file on every device - home theatre, laptop, iPod, iPhone, etc. and have it be able to play in whatever resolution the device needs without having to re-encode it.
Someday...
