iPhone beta screen-shotting

TUAW reader Scott writes that he's discovered how to grab screen shots from the iPhone or iPod touch running the new beta developer release. While attempting to reboot the phone, he noticed the "infamous" white flash I wrote about a few weeks ago. A little experimentation revealed the magic key combo was Power Button followed by Home Button. Unknowingly, he had shot about 5 of these due to several lockup-reboots.
We have no way to confirm this because none of us are running 1.2/2.0 but let us know if this magic key combo works for you.

I wish I could get the SDK so I can do multi-touch, accelerometer, and Open GL, but I'm still very early in the Obj-C learning process and the $99/year isn't a good investment for me now.

The SDK is free to download. The iPhone 2.0 software is available to the folks who want to sign up for the enterprise Beta program ($99) to try out developed software on 4-5 phones their company wants to use in their pilot program.
Go to developer.apple.com and download the SDK to your heart's content, mon friend. It even comes with a simulator. But if you want to test an application on an actual iPhone, yeah, it'll cost you the big bucks; one aformentioned c-note.

Right, I mean 2.0 firmware, I've been messing with the SDK but it's limited.

I don't think it does it on 1.1.4 my 2.0 phone flashes and the picture ends up in the camera roll. My 1.1.4 phone just shuts off.

I can confirm that under the 2.0 beta SDK pressing power and then immediately pressing home does indeed make the screen flash white and drops a screen-shot into the photos folder. Very Useful! (Thanks!)
Here is a question however, can anyone confirm that under 2.0 the iTunes store and Apps store icons are gone? When I installed 2.0, I get the new Contacts icon, but both the store icons are absent.

I first read about this a few weeks ago here:

To take a screenshot, hold down Home (Menu) button on the phone and toggle the Mute button. The screen will flash and the screenshot will be saved to the Camera Roll. Simple as that!

And yes... it works in 1.1.4
Danny said 4:18AM on 4-01-2008
i'm afraid it's not working in 1.1.4.
aaron Alexander said 4:07PM on 3-31-2008
yes, but you have to do a modification to make the home/mute trick to work, this works out of the box, no hacks required.

I wish someone could do something similar on the iPod as we lack a "mute toggle".
