PC Magazine likes the new iMac

PC Magazine has been reviewing Mac for awhile now, but it still strikes me as rather novel when they recommend a Mac. That's just what they did for Apple's latest iMac. PC Mag doesn't find anything too groundbreaking on this new model, but the speed improvements are welcome.

But why mess with success? The current design of the iMac is serving it well, and similar computers from other companies still haven't caught up with the iMac in terms of looks.

However, not everything is rosy in iMac land. PC Mag disses the Mighty Mouse (I usually toss the included Mighty Mouse aside myself), and would like to see an integrated media card reader.

Maybe it's just me but I love my Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse. I did start with the wired one to my wired keyboard (the aluminum version iMac) but when I switched to the wireless keyboard i stole my brother's wireless mighty mouse. the heavier weight took some getting used to but after a few days it felt "just right" and the wired felt like and "cheap". I don't know why it gets such a bad rap, I love the scroll wheel's ability to do 360 degrees, I just recently did my first cleaning and no biggie in my eyes. All in all I love it, I hope Apple lets go of this "white" thing and make an aluminum body to match my iMac, I'd buy that.

The Mighty Mouse pea ball is great, the ability to scroll left and right as you scroll up and down is Great. The right click set up is set for failure, and the side buttons??? What side buttons, they are ridiculous. You need a degree in Yoga to activate them and that may not be enough.
The big secret to enjoying the mouse is use "SteerMouse" a third party driver. It works with both the USB and BlueTooth mice along with most every mouse out there. Well worth the $20.

@Oliver not a good idea in my opinion, not bad but I just don't want that anywhere on the iMac case itself. Card readers & hubs are cheap and if you shop around some are quite attractive aesthetically, and match your system well. I'd go with Scott's idea more USB ports but on the back and not the side but on both sides or add both USB, FireWire 400-800 & audio I/O on the opposite side too would be an improvement. I've been using Kenington Expert Mouse/Trackball Pro and love 'em. The only improvement it needs a better scroll ring and it would be near perfection for me in most common tasks. The Trackpad is right on Laptops/Notebooks/Netbooks etc., but a wireless touchpad might be useful but the scroll ring is hard to beat for surfin' in my book right now. ;) The Mighty Mouse needs a little tweaking but I've heard it can be troublesome. With the move to the aluminum/sliver finish it would make a better match for all but older hardware and the white MacBook.

I have never understood this big need for card readers. Just hooking up my one camera via USB is all I've ever needed.

Scott: I don't like the Mighty Mouse either (they always stop working on me within the first year). What mouse do you use instead?

We've gone thru 3 Mighty Mice in 2 years-fortunately 2 of them covered by warranty. Its one thing to design something mechanical that needs cleaning from time to time-its another thing to make it IMPOSSIBLE for the end-user to access the interior to clean it without breaking it and regluing it.

And count me in as someone who doesn't need a card reader, and can't figure out why reviewers want them integrated all the time. The camera I use has a card, but also connects directly to the computer.

I also think the Mighty Mouse sucks. The little scoll ball is impossible to clean and the shape of it gave me the worst case of tendonitis. I've got a nice curvy logitech with a real scroll wheel now.

The card reader idea sucks too. For all the reasons already brought up by everyone else. Honestly, I think device makers should get with the program and put bluetooth in EVERYTHING.

I have no interest in an integrated card reader. And I also put the Mighty Mouse aside (Kensington Expert Mouse trackball with 4 programmable buttons can't be beat). I have a new 24" iMac, although not the latest superspeed model. It's my second iMac. All the iMac needs to make it perfect:
- Matte screen option for people who hate glossy (I love glossy myself, but I think they lose sales because of this)
- MORE USB PORTS. The one under the keyboard (I say "one" because the mouse/trackball is always in the other one) is in an awkward spot, and some USB plugs are too fat and leave the keyboard uneven. And of the generous "three" on the back, one has my printer, and one has the keyboard. Leaving one, that's awkward to reach. Add a few fully-powered USB 2.0 ports along the side, and it would be ideal.
- A way to adjust the height, instead of just the tilt.

I have a card reader on my scanner/printer and have not once had any need to use it. Having one on an iMac would be a complete waste of time. Personally I would rather see two hard drives. With such large amounts of storage it would be cool to have a built in backup drive. Even if I didn't use it as backup I could spread my content over it and stagger my backups, or spread the risk of data loss, or something.

To make any changes to the iMac, Apple has to innovate not copy. One area where `i believe we would all like to go is improved security. Not against trojans, etc. But for emails. If we could have a smartcard slot and trusted identities stored on a smartcard then we could make email a legal and trusted commercial communication platform.

So a deal with a trusted e-signature provider and an Apple smartcard would be my choice of update.

Any mail without a signature identifying the sender, goes straight in the Junk folder! Good bye spam (or if the get a signature, then we know who it is!)
