Poll: Would you buy a 12" MacBook Pro?
Up until a few years ago, I had a 12" PowerBook G4 that I absolutely loved. It was truly portable (although the screen was a bit on the small side for me), relatively fast, and lightweight. Many of my consulting clients have asked if Apple had plans to replace the 12" PowerBook with a MacBook or MacBook Pro in the same form factor, but I've pointed them towards the 13" MacBook or MacBook Air instead. There's still a vocal group of former PowerBook G4 users who would like to see Apple come out with a new MacBook Pro -- complete with SuperDrive, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and Multi-Touch trackpad -- in that tiny 12" PowerBook case. If you're in their camp, visit and participate in the MBP12.com forum and add your voice to the people clamoring for a small, powerful MacBook Pro.
Do you think a 12" MacBook Pro would be a winner in the market? Take our poll!

The form factor of the PowerBook G4 could not be more perfect for portability - there have been many times where I've literally walked down the streets of NYC, jumping from one open WiFi to another while SSHing into remote linux servers in need of emergency attention. I simply can't understand why Apple doesn't see that they retired a winner. This situation has me feeling quite trapped between a rock and a hard place; I need an ultra-portable, durable device that gives me full keyboard and screen functionality, while also providing the fastest processing and video capability available. Nothing from either the MacBook, Pro, or Air lines satisfies these requirements. If Apple wants to maintain a consistent product line, and to steer away from the errors of the past, then someone should try to explain to me why the Air was released, and not a 12-13" Macbook Pro.

May 20 2008 at 8:09 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just wouldn't be able to stand having such small amounts of screen space. I have a 17" iMac right now, and didn't have enough room, so I scavenged a second 17" (but 4:3 ratio) monitor. Only now can I actually fit all my stuff.
May 17 2008 at 9:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just couldn't wait anymore and sold my 12" Powerbook on eBay. I bought a 15" MBP. I miss the small size of the PB, but I still love my MBP!
May 14 2008 at 11:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had the 12", loved it. Had there been an Air with FW I would have bought it. So, I bought a last summer's MBP demo unit on sale cheap. Bummer... but I really needed it.
But it's the WEIGHT damnit! I want a LIGHT WEIGHT laptop. Not this heavy bastard I ended up with! Need the firewire and some of the horsepower though..
What we really need is a 15" MacBook. The only reason I bought the MBP was for the bigger screen.

May 14 2008 at 3:25 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat I would really like to see, and I know I am not alone here, is a return to a pismo-esque machine. Do away with easily dentable, warm to the touch metal, and go back to the swoopy sleek black plastic. I know there is the black macbook, but that's not all. Put the ports at the back again, and add a door so they are well protected. Make the CPU upgradable again, and give use dual battery capability and an expansion bay. Put an intel core 2 duo, couple gigs of RAM, Serial ATA, USB 2.0, expresscard, and I would buy it.
-Typed on my 500mhz G3 Pismo with 768mb RAM, 80gb HD, happily running Mac OS X Tiger, 10.4.11.
