iPhone 101: Hold your ".com" button for a second

If you are running the new 2.0 firmware on your iPhone or iPod touch, you might not have noticed a new handy shortcut in Safari. When you type in your address, hold down the ".com" button to get a selection of 3 other domain name endings: ".net," ".edu," and ".org." When you tap on any of the endings, it will be automatically inserted in the address bar.

I work at LifeChurch.tv. I type .tv a lot in web addresses. It would be awesome if you could customize it, but I'm glad they don't allow that. Can you imagine if all of the keyboard things like this were customizable. The settings app would be crazy.

Good job Apple. Thank you for keeping it simple.

This is a good tip but why doesn't it have .tv? It should.

In fact, this works on localized iphone/ipod touch since 1.1.3 or 4 firmware. But just for your own country domain name ending

At Wiley Technology Publishing, we're looking for an author (or two) to write a concise Hacking iPhone 3g book, not for malicious purposes, but rather as a deterrent. We are the publishers of famous security guys like Bruce Schneier, Kevin Mitnick, etc. Wiley also is huge, owning Dummies, Frommers, Cliff Notes, Betty Crocker, Weight Watchers, Webster’s, Jossey-Bass publishing in San Fran, Sybex Certification publishing there as well, Blackwell, which we bought in 2006 and Wrox, which we bought about 5 years ago. In fact, there are more Wiley books in your local Barnes and Noble than any other publisher’s. Anyone interested?

This feature has always been there in italian and - I guess - other non-english keyboards.
In the previous version of the fw we used to have .com and .it buttons while we currently have .com, .it, .org, .edu.
A .net button would be very useful as it's much more common than .edu.

I'm wondering why .net has been replaced with .co.uk on UK phones, whilst .edu has been left there (an extension I doubt very few people in the UK use on a regular basis - we use .ac.uk for our universities).

".ca" is only an option when using the French Canada keyboard, because English speaking Canadians don't visit .ca websites, apparently.

I used to have a similar problem in OSX Panther... I couldn't switch to Canadian English spelling without having my keyboard converted to a French Canadian layout. Drove me nuts.

Now I need a French Canadian keyboard on my iPT to get .ca? Boo!
