Daddy, where do Macs go when they die?
Personally, I've never thrown away a Mac. I've always had someone to give or sell it to. I suppose it's a testament to the longevity of each unit.
The first Mac I owned, a Performa 6400, went to a friend of mine in Albuquerque. It had a good life: I installed a G3 upgrade card in its personality slot when its 603e processor wasn't cutting it anymore. I don't reckon she's using it still, though.
After that, I bought a Power Mac G4 with a 17-inch Studio Display (in matching graphite, of course). My aunt and uncle are still using that computer, and it's running just fine for the basic email and web browsing they need. It's probably more than they'll ever need, come to think of it.
Then came my iMac G5, which I sold to my previous employer for $500 or so. They sort of ... uh ... downsized after I left, so I'm not sure if it's being used right now. It runs great, though. I installed a new power supply in it a month or two before I sold it.
My MacBook and Intel iMac are running great for me right now, though, and I have no idea how they'll spend their retirement after they've done their bit for king and country.

I sold all my macs on ebay (1st portable mac, Powerbook 100, Powerbook 5300CS, iMac G3). a few weeks ago, I found an iMac G3 in a trash in the street... 1 week after, after a good cleaning, it was sold on eBay 60 euros !!
Macs never dies !!
Well i just have never god rid of them and now have a massive Apple collection which grows every day!
If you would like to see them please feel free to visit my website at http://www.comteccomputers.co.uk and click on the museum link. Any comments or additions would be appreciated!
I love you people who throw macs out :D I just set myself up with a SE for writing a couple days ago, at the cost of $0.00. The extended II keyboard is such a slice of (noisy) heaven. It's great to be in such a low distraction, tactile pleasing computer environment. Yay for System 6!
Things stay useful for as long as their hardware is reliable; software doesn't rust. ;)
Keep the old macs in service!
Let's see...
* The IIfx (complete with external 1200bps modem and CD-ROM) went to friends back in the Stone Ages;
* The overclocked PowerMac 6100av was given to an engineer friend who was interested in its guts (eww)
* I'm still carrying around the G3 Wall Street PowerBook (running 9.1). The battery has long failed, but it works fine when plugged into the wall. I should probably let it go, but there's just some sentimentality there that I can't get over.
* The Dual 533MHz PowerMac G4 is now with my mom (running 10.4.11), which is more than enough for her e-mail and Bejeweled.
* The wife's PowerBook G4 Titanium is a workhorse, even after having its hinges replaced and an external AirPort antenna added (to make up for its hideous internal antenna design). But it's time for this one to be put out to pasture: giving my wife random tiny shocks means it's getting too cranky. We've just bought her a new tricked-out MacBook, so the Ti will go our nephew.
* The Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 is still cranking along nicely. Threw 4GB RAM into it, and it doesn't miss a beat. It was originally used as a Microsoft test kit for early alpha XBox work, so I like to think it's found a better home.
Not sure what happened to our Apple IIe. Would have to ask my old man.
Kept an LCII way into the late 90s when it's hard drive failed. We recycled it.
Gave my Performa 6300 to my mom until it's hard drive died in 2004. Recycled.
Sold my PowerMac G3 333Mhz Tower to an ex girlfriend of mine...466Mhz Powerlogix processor included. Who knows what she's done with it.
Sold my Quicksilver 867Mhz G4 and Cinema display to old co-worker...he probably has it.
Sold 1.25Ghz PowerBook G4 to some guy on Craigslist. Gotta 1.67Ghz Powerbook.
Sold 1.67Ghz Powerbook for 2.33Ghz MacBook Pro.
Sold that 2.33 MacBook Pro to a co-worker....
Bought 2.66 Aluminum iMac...still got that.
I'm on my first Mac (new convert, MacBook) and when I replace it in the near future (I grew out of it in under a year) it will go to my parents.
Old computers tend to go to girlfriends (now ex's of course) or they get parted out.
Never thrown away! Mac SE, LC III, Wallstreet, G4 cube, and the main machine is a 24" iMac. With upgrades, my effective lifetime of a Mac is about 7 years. Besides the Macs, there's an Apple IIe, a IIgs, a Newton OMP and a 2000, and a NeXT slab.

G3 iBook - 2 logic boards and replaced with a G4 on the 3rd
G4 iBook - 2 logic boards, 2 topcases, 1 optical drive and sitting in the box with the return label about to be traded in b/c of the optical drive going out again for a new macbook (yay apple care on both of these . . . and going to be on the new macbook as well)
PowerMac G5 - sold to a classmate at college wanting to use it as a basic server
intel Mac Mini - using as a DVR and DVD player/recorder
Mac Pro - still using for graphics work
MacBook - on its way . . . second replacement computer due to Apple Care and the CRU system (lemon law)
I've never gotten rid of a Mac. My Classic Mac is sitting in a case in the closet, every now and then I pull it out and turn it on. Just for fun. My 7200/90 is sitting in the garage collecting dust. My Indigo iMac is upstairs in my son's room not getting much use since he broke the slot loading drive in it. My G3 iBook is in use by my 5 year old daugter and my wife gave my 4 year old son her iBook G4 when I handed down my 12" PowerBook to her.
