Apple making nice with MobileMe customers
In an email to subscribers, Apple says it has been working hard on getting MobileMe up to spec. The email details these improvements:
- Easy File Sharing. It's especially nice to have the large file sharing turned on and working. It was supposed to be available months ago, and while one could quibble about how it is only available from the web client, at least it has been delivered
- Faster Syncing with Mac and PC. The speed of updates between computers and the iPhone have been increased. My own experience confirms that this is now working very well. Your mileage may vary, but most reports are positive
- Improved notifications and sync on iPhone. Apple says the reliability of new email notices and syncing of contacts and numbers with MobileMe have been improved. Apple suggests you run iPhone software version 2.2 or later for optimal notifications.
- Better web app performance. Apple wants customers to know that the web app is faster, particularly with regard to start time for Calendar and Contacts search. I can't confirm this. Loading my Calendar took more than a minute this morning using Safari 4 beta. Later in the day, it came up instantly. I don't see anything dramatically faster in searching for contacts. You may do better, or, perish the thought, worse.

I would like to get out of my contract - I am only in it less than a week. It made my signing in a nightmare. I only have a MAC so I really do not need it.

Much better than at launch !
Are you listening, Apple? .mac sync'ed my subscribed cals with my iPhone, MobileMe does not. I pay for .mac/MobileMe so my wife and I can subscribe to each other's calendars. Fix this!
And let me at least see the details of an iCal attachment in Mobile Mail. Are you kidding me? This is supposed to be corporate-ready. My corporate clients laugh at me when I reply and ask them to email me the date/time because I can't read an iCal attachment on my iPhone!
A few concerns
(i) Existing iTunes account - can't merge existing accout to your mobileme account once you set it up (yes, this is ridiculous! - you have to keep a non-apple email account for iTunes store purchases)
(ii) One Mac + 2 iphones - only one can have automated sync - the other must use a cable (also affects publishing photos etc)
(iiia) iPhone cannot use even one alias as the primary sent from address
(iiib) Still would like the ability to rotate out primary to alias addresses - not a concern if (iiia) is fixed
I have been a .Mac subscriber from the beginning, although I would have been hard-pressed on many occasions to explain why; and I, too, have seen the "new, improved" MobileMe service get better over time. One of MobileMe's best offerings, imho, is the web photo gallery, which is definitely one of the best-looking and easiest-to-use online photo galleries I have ever seen. Definitely makes Flickr look like the also-ran that it really should be. There's no accounting for taste...

2. allow invitations to be accepted via calendar
3. multiple email accounts to be pushed without forwarding to .me
mobile me is a joke. $99 for a service that is slow, buggy, severely limited disc space and back to my mac doesn't work. Not to mention the web interface is terrible.
Apple has a long way to go before this service can be used reliably.
I have liked .mac and now MobileMe since day one, I have used it to keep 3 Macs, two iPhones and a Windows PC in sync and sharing items. It has never been bug free for sure, but regardless its been useful. So far I notice the speed improvement, including pushing info to the iPhone.
Very much work by $99
They may have fixed some of the low hanging fruit, but when trying to upload to a public folder, the file does successfully upload, but you wouldn;t know it until you log out and back in again. The spinning icon that indicates progress is being made during the upload NEVER stops spinning to indicate success. or failure.
I put a ticket in on this Sept 9, 2008... I was hopeful to see a fix with the last big upgrade...
