Apple is preparing for a future where artificial intelligence requires more computing power and higher operating costs. Rather than charging directly for Apple Intelligence, the company plans to link AI usage limits to iCloud+ subscription tiers. This approach could help offset the expense of running cloud-based AI services while encouraging more users to subscribe to Apple’s storage plans.
Although Apple prioritizes on-device AI whenever possible, some requests rely on Private Cloud Compute servers. Those server operations cost money, making long-term monetization an important consideration as Apple expands its AI offerings.
Higher Plans Could Unlock More AI Usage
During Apple’s latest earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said the company is still evaluating how AI computing costs will affect its business. He explained that AI usage limits will depend on a customer’s iCloud+ subscription tier. However, Apple has not yet revealed the exact limits for each plan.
The report also notes that AI-powered video recognition for Apple Home already depends on higher subscription levels. Users need either the 2TB iCloud+ plan or the Apple One Premier bundle to access unlimited HomeKit Secure Video cameras with AI analysis.
Storage Plans May Become AI Plans
Apple currently offers a free 5GB iCloud plan, along with paid options that range from 50GB to 12TB. According to the report, premium plans are expected to include larger daily AI usage allowances.
While this strategy could encourage upgrades, it may also leave some users paying for storage they do not need simply to access additional AI features.
Services Revenue Could Keep Growing
Apple expects AI to increase operating expenses over time. At the same time, executives remain uncertain whether iCloud+ subscriptions alone will fully cover those costs. If necessary, the company could introduce additional pricing options in the future.
AI Strategy Still Evolving
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI remain in an early stage of development. As new capabilities arrive, cloud computing demands will likely increase. Consequently, Apple may continue refining its pricing strategy as AI adoption grows.
