Apple reportedly reserved most of its initial iPhone Duo inventory for physical stores, leaving significantly fewer devices available online.

According to an October 30, 2026 report, the company allocated as much as 80% of its launch stock to Apple Stores.

Consequently, online customers faced extremely limited availability when pre-orders opened.

Although Apple described demand for its foldable smartphone as “extraordinary,” its distribution strategy may have contributed to the rapid sellout.

Meanwhile, customers visiting retail locations also struggled to secure the device.

Online Pre-Orders Receive Smaller Allocation

Apple reportedly directed only 20% of its available iPhone Duo inventory toward online purchases.

Importantly, this allocation also included customers ordering online for in-store collection.

Therefore, the remaining 80% primarily supported customers purchasing devices directly from Apple Stores.

The reported figures came from sources familiar with Apple’s logistics planning.

However, Apple has not officially confirmed these percentages.

Additionally, the company does not publicly disclose detailed iPhone production figures or retail inventory allocations.

As a result, the exact number of devices available at launch remains unknown.

Some Apple Stores Received Just 50 Devices

Despite receiving most of the available inventory, individual stores reportedly had surprisingly small quantities.

Some Apple Stores received approximately 50 iPhone Duo units.

Meanwhile, larger flagship locations may have received as many as 250 devices.

These numbers appear modest compared with previous iPhone launches.

For example, certain stores previously received hundreds of iPhone X units.

Similarly, major retail locations received thousands of iPhone 18 Pro devices.

Consequently, even customers who visited stores early could not necessarily secure an iPhone Duo.

Foxconn Considers Expanding Production

The limited availability has increased attention on Apple’s manufacturing capacity.

Foxconn, one of Apple’s major manufacturing partners, has discussed using international facilities to increase production.

However, the report does not confirm when additional devices might become available.

Furthermore, Apple previously acknowledged that initial iPhone Duo supplies would be limited.

The company has not provided detailed figures explaining the shortage.

Therefore, customers must wait for further information about future stock availability.

Retail Strategy Raises Questions

Apple’s reported decision highlights an unusual approach to distributing a highly anticipated smartphone.

By prioritising physical stores, the company gave walk-in customers access to a larger share of its inventory.

However, the strategy also restricted online availability and created uncertainty for buyers.

Ultimately, the iPhone Duo launch demonstrates how limited production and inventory decisions can influence customer experiences.

Whether Apple can quickly improve availability will depend on its ability to increase supply.
