Apple is reportedly developing OLED versions of the iMac and MacBook Air, signalling a major display upgrade for its popular computers.
However, customers hoping to purchase these models soon may face a lengthy wait.

According to reports published on October 25, 2026, Apple has begun testing prototypes featuring OLED screens.
The company is also preparing its upcoming “Pro and Tell” event, where an OLED MacBook Pro could make its debut.
Meanwhile, the iMac and MacBook Air are expected to retain their existing display technology in their next updates.
OLED Technology Could Improve Mac Displays
OLED technology offers several advantages over traditional LCD screens.
Unlike LCD panels, OLED displays illuminate individual pixels without requiring a separate backlight.
Consequently, they can deliver deeper blacks, stronger contrast, and more vibrant colours.
Additionally, OLED technology can improve the viewing experience when watching movies, editing photographs, or working with graphics.
However, introducing OLED across Apple’s computer lineup requires further development and production planning.
For now, Apple appears focused on testing the technology before bringing it to more affordable Mac models.
New iMac and MacBook Air Models Expected First
Apple reportedly plans to introduce an updated iMac within days of the October 25 report.
However, that model is not expected to include an OLED display.
Similarly, a refreshed MacBook Air could arrive in early 2027 while continuing to use non-OLED technology.
These expected releases suggest Apple will continue improving its existing products before introducing major screen changes.
Furthermore, reports indicate that OLED development remains separate from the company’s immediate Mac refresh schedule.
OLED Mac Launches Could Slip to 2029
Industry predictions have repeatedly changed regarding Apple’s OLED rollout.
In December 2025, one supply chain report suggested a 24-inch OLED iMac could arrive in 2027.
However, later information from August 2026 pointed toward a possible 2029 launch.
The MacBook Air faces a similar timeline.
Although earlier predictions suggested 2027 or 2028, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicated that 2029 was more likely.
Additionally, reports suggest Apple may introduce another OLED MacBook model in 2029, positioned between the Air and Pro ranges.
What This Means for Mac Buyers
Apple has not officially confirmed these OLED launch dates.
Therefore, customers should treat the timelines as industry expectations rather than guaranteed release schedules.
Ultimately, Apple’s reported testing suggests OLED displays could become an important part of future Macs.
However, buyers seeking a new iMac or MacBook Air may have several years to wait for the technology.
