Two super simple DIY hacks for the iPhone

I've been reading the Unplggd blog from Apartment Therapy a lot lately, because I recently moved into a new place and am trying to fill it up with cool stuff. And someone over there must be an iPhone fan, because I've seen not one but two great and simple tricks for the iPhone there recently. The first is the most billiant thing I've ever seen -- if you happen to be listening to music or a conference call through the speaker on your iPhone and need it a little louder, you can just find a pint-size glass, put the iPhone in there, and voila, simple iPhone echo chamber. I'm surprised at both how easy this is and how well it works, but it does. Very impressive.

Second is a little more obvious -- if you're using an iPhone to read off a recipe in the kitchen, with your hands messy and wet, you can put it in a baggie like I do, or you can CryoVac it, if you happen to have one of those sitting around. Either way, the capacitive touchscreen still works through a thin layer of plastic, and your iPhone will live to see another day.

Ok, so the second tip is not quite as great as the first one. But a pint glass! Trying to listen to all of those boring conference calls with my iPhone's speaker will never be the same again!

I've been using the iPhone in the car by placing it speakers-down in one of the front cup holders. Works fine and the sound level is good enough to listen even at highway speeds. I'm not concerned about this being less than top-quality audio. I'm just happy to be able to listen to 'my' music while on the road.

My only complaint (suggestion) is that the music should be playable through my Prius' bluetooth connection. In this way, it would take full advantage of a good audio system. Why can't/hasn't this been done already? It doesn't sound very hard to so. Could Apple be holding this feature for a future release?

I've also been using this hack for a while now. It's ok if the ambient noise is low but in a place with lot of background noise like in a car at high speed or in the shower it's not really usable.

Also, in shower be very careful not to get moisture in the phone or the speaker will stop working (until it's dry again). Oh, and in my experience glass can scratch the iPhone. Big plastic cups are probably best but even a normal coke cup you get from mcdonalds is fine.

p.s I got a jbl onstage speaker in the end. Works great in the shower room.

I used to use a large fruit bowl in the kitchen when listening to podcasts or just bounce it off a surface when in the bathroom. I don't take it in when I'm having a shower as way too much moisture.

When I am trying to show people the videos that my son has created, I usually just CUP my hand around the speaker end of the iPhone which has a similar effect. It works quite well.

you could just use the 3GS’ voice over function to read the recipe aloud to you

Do you get feedback using the glass as a speaker phone?

Any decent speakerphone, including the iPhone, cancels out the speaker output from the mic input. Even out of the glass with the mic and speaker being so close you'd get feedback anyways if this weren't the case.

I bet it does give a bunch of feedback. My wife complains about it when I'm using the speakerphone and it's lying on a table. Can't imagine trying it in a glass. Yes I have a 3GS.

combine the 2 tips: put the iPhone in a baggie and then put it into the pint glass full of beer... everyone knows how well sound travels through water, how does beer fare?

Best reason I can think of to schedule conference calls to happen at the pub.

The pint glass hack should not be needed. It merely serves to highlight my longtime complaint with the iPhone: Crappy speakerphone. The 2G was abysmal! The 3G was somewhat better but still didn't even compare to most other phones. I haven't used the 3GS so I can't really say about that. My 3G died in a battle with my washing machine so I took the opportunity to save some money and get away from ATT and I went to sprint. The pre is definitely no iPhone, but the speaker rocks and I save like $40 per month on my bill.

I've been using this "pint glass tip" for a loooong time, works quite nice all the time!

But... *cough* uhm... last summer I actually managed to drop my iPhone 2G in a glass when trying to show off my l33t - half filled with beer. Yes, I was THAT dumb. Well... one can guess that my iPhone 2G didn't like beer as much as I did and it refused to work or respond to my dumbas*-fingers a few hours later - just in time for a new 3GS btw... talk about coincidence! ;)

So, just in case: be careful with this when trying it with (half) full glasses! :P
