iLounge leaks details on next-gen iPods, iPhone, iPad
Earlier today, iLounge reported on a few tidbits of leaked info regarding the next batch of iPods (due in September), as well as details on a possible "iPad mini" and iPhone 5. iLounge has given out very accurate information in the past, so it's likely that at least some of their info is spot-on. Here's their leaked info, presented roughly in order of how likely it is to be true:1. A new iPod nano and iPod touch will debut within the next couple of months. This one is a no-brainer; Apple's been holding annual September refreshes of its iPod line as far back as I can remember. The iPod shuffle is also due for an update, with iLounge claiming the device will come with a 1.7" touchscreen display. The current shuffle has no controls on its body at all, with all input coming from its included headphones' buttons, so even a touchscreen barely bigger than a postage stamp would be a welcome improvement. Notably, there's no info offered on the iPod classic -- many people believe the iPod classic will be retired this year.
2. Apple will redesign its bumper cases to an all-silicon design to reduce the cost of its free bumpers for iPhone 4 program. This is probably the impetus behind Apple's insistence that current iPhone 4 owners must apply for a free case before September 30.
3. Supposedly, a 7-inch "iPad mini" will come out either later this year or in early 2011. I'd say this one could go either way. I can certainly see a market for a smaller iPad, but squeezing the iPad's hardware into a smaller form factor may cause a significant hit to battery life -- the battery dominates most of the internal space of the current iPad.
4. Least likely of all (even iLounge admits they find it hard to believe), Apple is rumored to be moving the release date of the iPhone 5 up by six months to address the "Antennagate" concerns. I don't see this happening for a couple of reasons. First, it would be a tacit admission on Apple's part that the iPhone 4 has a design flaw. Second, Apple has refreshed the iPhone in mid-year three years in a row; bringing out a totally new design only six months after the iPhone 4 would have millions of iPhone 4 owners grabbing their torches and pitchforks. It seems more likely this January 2011 "iPhone 5" would be more like an "iPhone 4.5." Such a device would be substantially similar in design and features to the iPhone 4, but with a slightly modified antenna (probably as simple as an extension of the antenna insulation from its current thin line to a wider band), 64 GB capacity on the high end, and support for Verizon's CDMA network.

August 05 2010 at 1:19 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot sure we need a miniPad, but how about a device that gets bigger or smaller just by pinching in or out? Now THAT I would buy!

A morphingPad would be great!
I've wanted a morphing car for years. It could change from an economical car for commutes, to an SUV for when your stuck in the mud to a van for long family trips to a sports car for trips around the ring.
I also thought that if we all had cars made of Nerf material, we'd save a lot of hassle on repairs when we have fender benders. The cars would just bounce off of each other.
Maybe our MorphPad could be made of Nerf too.
Not sure a smaller iPad would work. The size right now is nice and I could see people wanting a bit larger (but lighter) version more than a smaller version. Just get an iPod touch if smaller is what you're looking for.

I've played with an Android tablet called iRobot 7in tablet and all. So this I guess will not be. Exactly like an ipad but feels android....I'll give it a miss.
ahaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Why not keep an eye on "iFunia resource" to get the newly and simply info???
Anybody got an approximate date for their press conference? I'm holding out for hopefully a new iPod Touch(hopefully iPhone 4 esque, without the hardware problems), as I have a U2 30GB 5G iPod Video. Battery life on it has gone down to about and hour and a half of video... And its getting really hard to wait....my birthday is august 31st...so, any approximate date?
August 04 2010 at 10:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, generations 2 and 3 were released on September 9th, 2008 and 2009 respectively, so probably around then.
August 04 2010 at 11:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's pure comedy that people still think that there will be a Verizon iPhone. If Verizon was on the verge of collapse and had to give up the idea of the control they want, maybe. Apple will never budge. Not even for any amount of profit they could make off that.
Just get a droid phone. It's the best rip-off money can buy.
Why do you say it's a rip-off? Just curious.
August 04 2010 at 11:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI disagree with the reasoning behind 4. It's certainly likely that Apple could be changing there strategy regarding iPhone releases. One year is a very long time to release new hardware updates, especially in the ever changing mobile phone market. This is one of the reasons Android sold so many phones in Q2 - more than Apple. Its because by month 9, the iphone 3gs was very outdated, and so many people ended up being a new DroidX with much better hardware than waiting for the new iphone in June.
August 04 2010 at 7:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm not holding my breath for a 7" iPad. Why? First of all 7" is a tweener. Maybe okay for a single purpose e-reader but to be a mobile computing device? iPad apps esp games are optimized for the current screen size. I don't think they'll work well scaled down to a 7" screen.
August 04 2010 at 7:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf they discontinue the iPod classic, I hope they at least bump up the storage capacity of the iPod Touch to at least the same as the discontinued models. We need a 250GB, or better yet a 500GB iPod. Some of us have serious music collections.
August 04 2010 at 6:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have several friends with terabyte (and up) music collections, and I will NEVER understand the desire to have that much music. Yes, it's nice to have a lot of music, but COME ON! That's what like 20 years of non repeated songs played 24/7?
No one needs that much music. People with that much music have it just to have it, IMHO.
