iTunes 101: Share your Ping profile

Here's a tip about something that had me confused for a while, I hate to admit. After setting up Ping in iTunes 10 and getting my profile just so, I naturally wanted to tell the eager masses where to find me. After all, many of the folks I follow on Twitter were sharing URLs to their accounts. But where did it come from?

The answer is quite simple. Log into your account, and right-click (or control-click) on the "My Profile" link. Then select "Copy link" from the contextual menu and you're all set! Paste that address in Twitter, email or where ever you want to broadcast your shiny new account.

Another, more roundabout way of accomplishing the same task is to search for yourself on Ping, and when your name shows up under "People," right-click your avatar icon and choose "Copy link."

We'll have more iTunes 10 tips and tricks coming right up.

Lugi - I'd be happy to take you up on a wage on that. Ping was the mainstay of Apple's press event. They've clearly got big plans for Ping. A million people signed up to use it in 48 hours.

Yup, it's a mess right now, but there's around a zero percent chance that it will "have disappeared" before 10.2. Just not going to happen.

OK, David, let's make it $1! I truly believe this is going to be a fiasco for Apple. Steve did not appear to be that enthused about it, either. Apple should be removing things from iTunes, not adding.

Ping is an embarrassment; I guarantee you it will have disappeared before iTunes 10.2 is released. I honestly wouldn't know where to begin describing what is wrong with it. The notion that people are going to broaden their musical horizons with this is laughable on its face.

Is the first method in this tip correct? It appears to me that right-clicking the "My Profile" link and then copying it provides a generic link to the clicker's own profile (http://c.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZConnections.woa/wa/viewProfile?cc=us).

However, it does appear that finding yourself in the search, and then right-clicking on the link to your profile seems to let you copy the correct link.

That's correct. Right-clicking then copying the "My Profile" link produces a generic link.

Here's how to get a sharable link:

LEFT-Click on "My Profile."
When your profile appears, RIGHT-CLICK ON YOUR NAME and select "Copy link."

You can then paste your sharable link anywhere you want.

So far the only non-artist I'm following is Phil Schiller :P

Excellent tip. Now we just need all the artists to jump on board so we can discuss news relevant to more than just a scattering of recent pop artists. I'm really excited about Ping's potential (largely do to the difficulty in locating your real friends on last.fm) but so far I haven't been able to do anything useful with it.

It would be great to see finding friends by mutual interest in music, and some integration with official band websites.

Any more pointers how to get more out of Ping, TUAW readers?
