MobileMe boxed copies going away

Apple is reportedly informing third-party resellers that boxed versions of MobileMe are now discontinued. Retailers can continue to sell their existing inventory, but supplies will not be replenished. This latest information falls in line with earlier rumors that suggest Apple may offer MobileMe as a free service with cloud-based digital lockers for music, photos and videos.

In this scenario, Apple may briefly move to a digital-only sales model to let retailers sell their existing stock. Once the standing inventory is depleted, Apple will transition MobileMe to a free service in the upcoming months. Adding fuel to the fire of these rumors, Apple has removed the paid version of MobileMe from its online store, offering the service as a free 60-day trial.

During its annual shareholders meeting on February 23, the Cupertino company also confirmed that it is getting ready to flip the switch on its North Carolina data center. The $1-billion center is rumored to serve as the hub for its free MobileMe service and possibly a cloud-based version of iTunes.

I have sold a little more than 1000 boxes of MobileMe in the past 6 months I dont want to imagine what will happened if those people will demand refund. Which I find it nearly impposible to happend.

I am up for auto renewal in another week.
I chatted with MobileMe subscription help services and you have 45 days after purchasing or renewal to receive full credit if you cancel the service.

After 45 days you are prorated on the refund.

You could even buy a renewal from Amazon, and get a refund of the purchase price if you are within the 45 days.

Going free? Great news, but WTF am I supposed to do with the already entered Family Pack code in queue waiting for my renewal date (mid June)? I prematurely jumped on a Family Pack because the price was so cheap I couldn't pass.

Oops, never mind, didn't pay attention to the "already entered" part :)
Maybe they will have a transition period?
Or have a premium tier?

Obviously Apple is not going to tell its retailers to continue selling boxes if the service is going free next week. Aside from the PR disaster that would follow, there are laws that prevent selling a knowingly defunct service.

Using a little common sense, it seems most likely that Apple will announce two versions of the MobileMe service: a free option with various restrictions to the services and a full services premium option. Current subscribers would automatically be rolled over into the latter service.

From Apple's MobileMe Terms of Service agreement:

"Changes in Price
Apple may at any time, upon notice required by applicable law, change the price of the Service or any part thereof, or institute new charges or fees. Price changes and institution of new charges implemented during your subscription term will apply to subsequent subscription terms and to all new subscribers after the effective date of the change. If you do not agree to any such price changes, then you must cancel your account and and stop using the Service. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of any such change shall constitute your acceptance of such change."

I'm sure that if it indeed does become a free service, there will either be a paid component, such as extra storage space, an itunes subscription service, or automatic cloud backups, which paying customers will be transitioned to, or they will be offered a prorated iTunes or Apple Store gift card for the amount left in their subscription. While not a full cash refund, I'm sure most customers will take it as if you pay for mobilme, it's a safe bet your invested in Apple's consumer universe.

I hope you're right. I forgot to cancel my auto renewal, and just started a new year two weeks ago. I know I'd put $90 to good use in-store.

I don't think they should make it totally free. I do think it would be nice if they included a year of service with the purchase of an Apple device. Similar to how Applecare is sold.

I know I usually average about one new Apple product a year so it would be like getting it free.

Can't wait for the buyers now to commence grousing in April when it becomes free that Apple suckered them out of $60-100.

Still need a cc to sign-up...if it's going to be free, they should remove that (though PayPal would be a nice option if it were still going to be a paid service).

I renewed in January swearing that it would be the last time if they didn't do something big this year.

Free or not, it needs some sensational functionality.
