Second source suggests Apple purchased icloud domain

Earlier this week, we reported on a circulating rumor that suggested Apple bought the icloud.com domain name. Today, All Things Digital added to that rumor with a report of its own. According to AllThingsD, "sources in position to know" have confirmed to them that Apple did buy the icloud.com domain name from Xcerion, a cloud computing company based in Sweden.

The original rumor suggested Apple paid up to $4.5 million for the domain name, but AllThingsD was unable to corroborate that figure with its source. Presumably, Apple will use this domain name for the rumored iTunes in the cloud and digital locker service it is supposedly gearing up to launch. Would you be excited to use your iCloud account to sync your iPhoto and iTunes content with your iPad while you're on the iGo?

MobileMe for consumers.
iCloud for business.

I know Apple is not first to this game (see iPod, iPhone) - but I think they will get it done the way only they can (OS/Hardware/Cloud all the same company).

For instance, I don't see them going to a separate app (Amazon Cloud Player app for Android). I see them integrating this into iPod app on the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch. You won't need to remember, "Did I sync this song/album locally? Or in the cloud?"

I anticipate there will be a visual cue for the songs that are in the cloud to let you know in case you want to "download" your songs for offline listening.

You don't need to be first to be innovative, or to be the best.

Not in the least.

I like the idea but as long as the mobile internet network in the UK is so poor outside of the major cities, then I won't bother. I think i'd spend most of the time waiting for a song to buffer as opposed to actually listening to my music.

I'll only use their iService if it's iFree or iCheap.

They are way late to this party and will need to be really inexpensive if they want a large crowd to not only join up, but more importantly, stay with them. $99/yr for MobileMe is just insane, especially considering Google (among others) basically does the same thing for free. And with options like DropBox, Box, SkyDrive, and others, I don't see this thing working unless they pretty much give it away.

I think they might brought the domain but I think it's more just to mothball it so people don't end up equating iCloud as a service to Apple. Kind of hard to do this now but iCloud seems like a iffy name but then remember all the fun we had with the iPad?
