MobileMe stays live through June 30, 2012
Apple's new iCloud service is a full, free replacement for MobileMe. But iCloud won't officially launch until iOS 5 debuts this fall. What does that mean for existing MobileMe subscribers?
Not long ago we advised our readers not to pay for a MobileMe upgrade if their accounts were about to expire. Not to brag or anything, but it looks like that was some pretty sweet advice. Current MobileMe subscribers have had their accounts extended until June 30, 2012, over a full year of additional service. Apple isn't accepting new MobileMe subscriptions right now, and you're also unable to upgrade your current subscription to a Family Pack or purchase additional storage. If you already have a Family Pack, however, you are still able to create new family member accounts.
If you took our advice and didn't pay to upgrade your account, you should have had full access restored by now. My MobileMe Family Account technically expired in the last week of May, but none of my services were ever restricted, and I've also been granted the same additional year of service as subscribers in good standing.
If you didn't listen to our advice (or didn't hear about it) and recently upgraded your MobileMe account, you can contact Apple for a refund. The refund terms sound a bit ornery, though; Apple only specifically mentions refunds being offered if you have a MobileMe box with an unused activation code. On the other hand, if you paid for an upgrade or started a new account within the past couple of weeks, if you plead your case to Apple (nicely), there's a pretty good chance the company will give you at least a partial refund.
MobileMe was down for about an hour this morning for some people (myself included), but the service is back up and running now. MobileMe's replacement, iCloud, will go live later this year, and unlike the US$99/year MobileMe service, iCloud will be free.

How can we assist you?
Perry:
i renewed on may 18 and have been reading conflicting information about cancellation and proration. can you please clarify.
Courtnie:
Were you trying to cancel?
Courtnie:
Are you still there?
Perry:
not at this moment, but i want to make sure that I am properly credited for the services. Many of the changes you have made to the services have affected my usage
Courtnie:
I can understand how this would concern you. You will be properly refunded as stated in our cancelation policy. You are eligible for a refund and may cancel at any time.
Perry:
What I am trying to understand is the 45 day cancellation. Will the services continue after the 45 days?
Courtnie:
Since MobileMe is being discontinued, once you cancel that will be it. No more MobileMe. Only members who keep their account active will be able to keep the service. But in order to issue a refund, the account must be canceled completely.
Perry:
That is what I am trying to clarify. The Apple website is pretty vague and the blogs I read are just as confused. thanks
Courtnie:
You are most welcome.
Perry:
so if i cancel when icloud is released, what happens then? what happens to my data backups and email addresses? this is really confusing
Courtnie:
When iCloud is released, you can transfer your account and data to the new service. Then cancel the MobileMe account for a refund. If you wait until iCloud is released, you will only be eligible for a pro-rated refund. Right now you are eligible for a full refund.
Perry:
That is the full answer that I am looking for. thank you. can this transcript be shared?
Courtnie:
Yes. Of course.
Courtnie:
You are most welcome. Just to make sure, have we addressed all of your concerns today?
Perry:
thank you. I think it will clarify many unanswered questions. an updated support page with this info would be helpful, too. good bye.
Courtnie:
Good deal. Take care. Have a great week ahead!
After reading your article I advised a client not to renew her mobile me account until after WWDC, and now she has NO account. Apple tells us it's inactive, and they are unable to reactivate any accounts, or open a new one. Any suggestions?
June 08 2011 at 6:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHere is my transcript from Apple. I was automatically renewed on June 4. Basically if you are in my boat you have to pay $99 for a few months of service. According to Michael at support even if I cancel today (even though I was active on June 6) I will lose everything!
So long Mobile Me! You weren't that great anyway.

The only way you can get a refund is to cancel your account. Effective June 6, 2011, if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.
Catherine:
so does that mean because I had an active account on June 6 then I will have access - I am not understanding this
Michael:
You renewed account on June 4, so normally it would expire on June 4, 2012. We have extended your account to June 30, 2012 at no additional charge, so you are actually getting almost a month's worth of MobileMe subscription for free.
Catherine:
you haven't answered the question very well.
Michael:
What is your question?
Catherine:
I only need mobile me till the fall
Catherine:
If I cancel today. Will I have access until June 2012?
Michael:
No
Michael:
If you cancel today you will not have access nor can you reactivate your MobileMe account.
Catherine:
Nice Apple! I miss it by 2 days! I guess I will learn to live with out it and report back to a bunch of blogs!
Michael:
I can be sure to report your concerns about this to our engineering department, so that they will do their best to address this issue in the future.
Catherine:
thanks
Catherine:
I was an apple fanboy - but now I am pretty upset
Catherine:
I will now sync my calenders and be gone"
So I've read through a bunch of the comments and I also looked through Apple's refund page... but it's still not clear to me what I should do to request a refund.
I bought a box version of MobileMe, but that was like 2 or 3 years ago... since then my subscription renews online.. and my last subscription just renewed on May 27th... so where do I dispute an online auto renewal?
I listened to Tuaw's advice and didn't renew and got the account extended by Apple. I am wondering if iCloud will have additional data that we can buy to store Photos and Movies like we could in Mobile Me Gallery. Any word on that?
June 07 2011 at 6:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyPlease tell me I can still keep my .me email after the launch of iCloud. So there will be a new email domain for iCloud? e.g. .icloud ?
June 06 2011 at 10:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just chated with MobileMe support and although I confirmed that I could get the refund with no problem (my family account renewed one month ago), they also stuck to the version that I would loose everything. I decided to back up from my original intention of canceling the account right away, and try get more reassurances and take care of backing up all my accounts data.
June 06 2011 at 8:01 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMay I ask if your account really got deleted after you applied for a refund?
June 06 2011 at 11:05 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, that's also what I would like to know! I decided I'd better back up everything and wait for some more testimonies, before cancelling the thing.
June 07 2011 at 3:47 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate downApple is stating that icloud will be free with 5 gb of storage but music, apps, etc dont count against you. What about my idisk?
