Dear Aunt TUAW: Can I disable those battery alerts?
Dear Aunt TUAW,
Maybe I'm the only one this bothers, but Apple made a big deal about their whole new notifications in iOS 5. Then one day I was playing Canabalt, and I'm up to over 15,000! My high score is 17, so my heart really starts beating as I draw in.
Suddenly I got a big pop-up on my phone alerting me that I have 20% Battery remaining. Maybe there was a glitch or something but my game kept going for about a second (maybe even a second and a half) before pausing. Obviously long enough for my poor little man to plummet to his death. I looked but couldn't find a way to set that type of notification to "banner."
Maybe even go away completely?
Please help if you know.If not, let's all complain and maybe Apple will add that in a future update!
Your loving nephew,
Adam

Dear Adam,
Oof. That must have hurt! Unfortunately, power level notifications are not controllable through user settings, the way that reminders, appointments, and messages are.
You can always try submitting a feature request to Apple. Unfortunately, those tend to be popularity contests -- Apple tends to pay attention to the most requested items, and this is a wee bit, shall we say, niche.
Unfortunately, Auntie doesn't really have any advice other than play games on a fuller charge where possible so you don't run into low-battery warnings. And yes, she knows how lame that advice is.
Got other suggestions for Adam? Add them to the comments.
Hugs,
Auntie T.

Hi Auntie-
I recently purchased the 4S, along with the Apple Digital AV Adapter to plug into my HDTV. It works, but is there any way to have the mirroring take up the entire screen of the HDTV? I know the 4S will do 1080, but does it ouput in 4:3 vs. 16:9 aspect ratio? I was hoping for a full screen experience when it comes to viewing Safari pages, videos, etc.
Thanks,
Jeff
You can just Jailbreak it.... you have lots of options for disabling it, then. "Notified" lets you turn it off, I believe.

October 24 2011 at 9:44 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe fact that it didn't pause fast enough is a Canabalt bug, yes. But fixing that would not address the issue that all pop up notifications for battery life are just as annoying, and ultimately useless, as all the other pop up notifications Apple got rid of. I for one and going to join Adam in requesting they change this.

The OS just shouldn't be popping up modal stop-the-world alerts for relatively unimportant events like that.
October 24 2011 at 11:33 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFunny, I was just looking for one over the weekend myself! There are some jailbreak apps that will allow you to do so - I just downloaded one called "Advanced Preferences" which works as a Winterboard theme. Allows you to disable the power alert popup, but I won't know if it works until I've drained about 66% more of my iPad battery. But my fingers are crossed!
October 24 2011 at 9:43 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe biggest issue isn't the notifications ... it's the very fact that the iPhone 4S battery is drained nearly 25% faster than the iPhone 4.
October 24 2011 at 9:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI disagree. My battery has been acting much kinder to me than my iPhone 4 did. And I'm a very heavy user.
