Apple encourages MobileMe customers to transition to iCloud
MobileMe is scheduled to be shut down in June 2012, and Apple has begun encouraging users to transition to iCloud. Email messages are going out this week that promote iCloud's services and provide a big 'ol blue button for customers to click and begin the migration process.
iCloud offers most of the services MobileMe customers are used to (keychain sync and iDisk are absent, for example) and, according to CEO Tim Cook, is the foundation for the company's future.
It's only February, so stragglers have some time, but not much. It's definitely time to start thinking about making the move.

I subscribed to MobileMe for 3 years.
I tried iCloud and:
iDisk is not there -> moved to DropBox
Gallery is not there -> moved to Flickr
Address book Sync does not work (randomly loses 10-15% of my contacts)
I will never use Photostream unless I can choose what to upload and what not
iCLoud does not work with my OSs (Snow Leopard, Linux and XP) and some of my phones (iPhone 3G and Android)
I'd rather pay for MobileMe than have iCloud for free.
I moved to OwnClowd, hosted on my Linux box. It works from everything.
Just to be helpful here:
I migrated last weekend with two macs, an iPhone, and an iPad, and the whole thing went off without a hitch. I still have access to iWeb/iDisk until the services are shutdown in case anyone is holding off on migrating to hang onto those services. Make sure you follow Apple's suggested procedure for migrating (the migration assistant will give you a link to it) and everything should go okay.
I'm as miffed as most people about the fall of MobileMe. I hate the alternative and will hold out as long as possible also. I have an iPhone, iPad, 3 Macbook pros and a Mac Mini and loved the ability to sync account settings, iDisk, etc, etc. MobileMe had everything I was looking for and was willing to pay for it. iCloud? Not so much. Not happy. To boot, any calendars I've shared will become inaccessible by all but those that are also iCloud users. Bugger. Just plain bugger.

I'm not happy with Apple's attempt to force me into a new operating system so I have to choose between existing apps that will no longer work or a feature that Apple itself has changed.
It's bull.
Except it isn't. They're not forcing you, they're just shutting down a service and proposing a new one. If you don't do that, you'll be simply left in the cold.
Services are not forever.
Sure… iCloud is the foundation for their future. Until it isn't, just like MobileMe isn't anymore.

February 22 2012 at 1:08 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyApple really should consider some sort of iDisk service in iCloud.
having to rely on dropbox is fine, until i hit my space limit. and it would be assumed that apple could integrate it deeply in the OS to make it function even better than 3rd party solutions.... Come on Apple... we all know you can do it... so do it... please.
Not going to happen, Steve hated file systems, iDisk has a file system.
Unfortunately we'll be stuck on iCloud for a while (at the very least 2 more years)
Give me proper iCloud support in Snow Leopard and I will. Until then i'm sticking with MobileMe until the last possible day!

February 22 2012 at 11:12 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyOnly Problem with this is, those of us who can't or won't run any OS past Snow Leopard.
Apple won't cater "down" to 10.6.8 users, but will to Windows users?!?
Instead, turn an old Mac capable of running 10.6.8 into a server,
and you'll have ical sync, data storage, and contact sync and never have to
pay Apple again or deal with OS problems. Older minis are going for cheap
now, and make GREAT servers...
