Montreal Apple store grand opening today

The rumored Apple Store, Sainte Catherine in Montréal is opening today, in grand style. If you're in the area of 1321 Ste-Catherine st west besides the Ogilvy Department Store at the corner De la Montagne st (which I totally just grabbed from the store's website, I have no idea where any of that is) you should stop on by.

It looks like the store will also have a number of musical guests for the next few days to keep interest up. Amongst the musical folks stopping by the store are:

NY Times profiles Apple stores

From BusinessWeek predicting they wouldn't work to the New York Times writing a piece lauding Apple Stores as 'community centers' for the neighborhoods in which they are situated. The article points out that Apple now makes 20% of its total revenue from Apple Stores (not too shabby), and highlights some of the unique features of the stores themselves: the architecture, the staff, and the general feel of the stores.

The article also points out that some other high profile technology company's brick and mortar stores aren't doing nearly as well as the Apple Stores.

Lakeside (UK) Retail Store opens this Saturday

Rejoice, UK Apple fans, for England's green and pleasant land is about to be graced with another Apple retail store, just in time for Leopard's release next week (and the iPhone launch early next month). This Saturday morning, the UK's twelfth retail store is opening its doors at the Lakeside mall in Essex. All the usual paraphernalia of a store opening is scheduled from 9am on the 20th, with 1,000 commemorative t-shirts up for grabs, and the "Digital Lifestyle Collection that includes a 13-inch black MacBook and a silver 4GB iPod nano" offered as a raffle prize.

As ever, if there's any TUAW operatives visiting Lakeside this weekend, do send us stories and photos - and let's hope you score a t-shirt!

Apple to host UK Special Event 18/9

Thanks to tipster Lee for sending this, courtesy of MacFormat. Apple has announced an invite-only event to be held next Tuesday morning (18th September) at London's Regent Street Apple Store. The event invite is simply headed with the tagline "Mum is no longer the word" and instructions on how to get to the Regents Street store. My money, as with most, is on an iPhone announcement - possibly UK-specific given that it's just one week before Apple Expo Paris (Europe's largest Apple event) - however we'll clearly have to wait until next week to get any more out of Apple.

Use Spotlight as a reference tool. Type any word in the Spotlight box and one of the top entries will be a definition. Click on it, and it will bring up the dictionary application to check the word in either the dictionary, thesaurus, Apple database, or Wikipedia.
