1Passwd 2.1, build #3744 gets new icon, NetNewsWire support

1Passwd, our favorite Tiger-only web form filler and password manager, was updated yesterday to version 2.1 build 3744. It sports a shiny new icon and now supports NetNewsWire! Also in this release are over 20 other improvements and bug fixes, along with the following new features:
  • Added 'Find and Delete Duplicates' do locate web forms that have identical contents.
  • Added NetNewsWire extension (using context menu instead of toolbar).
  • Added dynamic toolbar buttons to all supported browsers.
  • Web forms now can be dragged to web browser to create bookmarks.
  • 1Passwd keychain will be automatically backed-up daily to a local folder.
  • Added Autosave Rules to disable autosave on user-defined domains.
  • Added 1Passwd context menu to Safari, Camino, DEVONagent, and OmniWeb.

Mac software purchases help Child's Play charity Dec 7th

Buying software from select Mac developers on December 7th, 2006 will do more than just add another icon to your Applications folder. It'll make the holidays a little nicer for sick kids in children's hospitals all over the world by providing them with toys, games and other seasonably charitable goodness.

A group of independent Mac developers are donating all of the proceeds from their sales of select applications on December 7 to Child's Play is a Seattle-based charity started in 2003 by the guys at Penny Arcade, the gaming company folks who make the gaming-oriented webcomic (thanks for the correction, Samuel!). All you need to do is buy the apps, just as you normally would. Your contributions will help make a kid's life a little cheerier, and you'll get some great software in the process.

There are some really great titles, too, so if you were considering treating yourself to some cool software, Dec 7 (tomorrow, for most of us) is the day to do it. Heck, you could even continue the spirit of giving by buying an app or two as a gift for someone else. Software Stocking Stuffers anyone?

This is a great effort for a great cause and I applaud the participating developers for their efforts.

Unsanity updates ShapeShifter and Mighty Mouse

I know there are some serious haxie haters out there, but for those who heart haxies, you'll be happy to know that Unsanity recently updated 2 of their most popular apps, ShapeShifter and Mighty Mouse. Both are now Universal Binary and sport a few bug fixes and new features.

ShapeShifter is a very cool "GUI tweaker" that enables you to change virtually everything about the appearance of OS X with various themes (of which there are a great many to choose from). Version 2.4 adds support for windows with a "Unified" toolbar, and includes several bug fixes and speed improvements. ShapeShifter now requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Mighty Mouse is for customizing your cursor - all your cursors - on the fly and with ease. The interface is drag & drop and copy & paste. Doesn't get much easier than that. You can add animations, change cursor sizes and even create your own custom cursors. Version 1.3 requires Mac OS X 10.3 or later and includes a more streamlined interface and a handful of bug fixes.

Manage and create beer recipes on your Mac

Mac360 directed me toward an app that I don't have any real use for, but I wish I did. Homebrew Formulator is a Filemaker runtime application, which means you don't need Filemaker to use it. The important thing to know is that Homebrew Formulator is all about helping you make your own beer - brew your own brew, if you will. It lets you manage and design your very own beer recipes and store them in a flexible and powerful database. It includes beer styles from the most current BJCP (Beer Judge Certification Program) Style Guidelines, a mash calculator, brewing water calculator, carbonation calculator, yeast repitch calculator and even a hydrometer correction calculator. Those words (other than the word beer) mean nothing to me, but to those who practice the art of fine homebrewing, it's probably important stuff.

Who knew that there was so much math involved with something as sublimely simple as beer?

I drink a lot of beer, but I will be the first to admit that I don't know a damn thing about making it. I know how to buy it and I know how to drink it. Usually I even know when to stop drinking it. I appreciate fine beer like some people appreciate fine wine - only without all that bothersome knowledge. I do think it would be very cool to make my own beer, however, and if I am ever inspired to brew more and drink less, this will be the first app I turn to to get me started.

You'll need Mac OS X 10.3.9 or better and Intel-based Mac owners will be glad to hear it's Universal Binary. The good news? Homebrew Formulator is free, as in beer. And on that note... will one of you toss me a cold one?

Tip of the Day

To get an instant map to any address, just go to your Address Book and right click on the address field of any one of your contacts and select "Map Of." The address will then be revealed in Google Maps on Safari. You can do the same if a data detector determines there is an address in an e-mail in Mail.
