Gear Live posts followup iPhone v1.1.3 video

You may recall that yesterday we posted a link to Gear Live's gallery of iPhone v1.1.3 snaps. In this season of rumors, we were trying to take it with a pinch of salt; we ended up with enough salt to make some Margaritas here at TUAW HQ, such was our skepticism -- and we were, it would seem, quite wrong to have doubted.

Thankfully Gear Live's Andru Edwards & Nate True decided to show us all what we can expect, with a full-blown video of the latest firmware, embedded after the break (all 8 minutes of it) with their permission. There's a tonne of exciting stuff shown off -- saving of pins on Google Maps, cell-tower triangulation with a single click (sweet!) and the long-missed hybrid Google Map (my preferred view). Throw in the re-arranging of the home screen and multiple SMS recipients (something we'd quite like to use over the holiday period) -- my iPhone is feeling very inadequate already.

iPhone v1.1.3 screenshots leaked?

Fire up that chunk of your brain known as the Macworld Rumourbuster, readers! With just a little over two weeks before Macworld kicks off, let's officially call the crowd to order, and let the rumour-mongering, blurry 'leaked' pictures, and Photoshop-ing begin.

Gearlive kicks off the "fortnight of faux" with a gallery of screen shots appearing to be from iPhone firmware v1.1.3. Among the highlights: rearranging icons on the home screen, and pseudo-GPS (based on cell tower proximity) for Google Maps. Are they authentic? ~~Macrumors points out that Gearlive is new to the Apple rumor game, and~~ "Eagle-Eye" Scott McNulty suggests that the iTunes icon on the pictures is in the wrong spot (although that could be part of the app-moving magic).

Whilst all the features shown in the gallery are certainly welcome, we can't help but feel that if this is the only feature-update to the iPhone at Macworld (barring the SDK in February), folks will be a little underwhelmed.

Update: Whilst MacRumors may say that Gearlive is the new kind on the block, that isn't necessarily true - they brought us news of the iPod nano a few years back. On the topic of Photoshop-ing - and undoubtedly we'll see plenty of that in the coming weeks - talking with the folks at Gearlive, this does indeed appear to genuine 1.1.3 goodness. Thanks, Andru!

iPhone update 1.1.2 is available in iTunes (US)

On Monday night, Apple finally made iPhone Update 1.1.2 available via the US iTunes Store. Apple's description of the update is typically cryptic ("...new features and bug fixes"), but we've noticed a few changes.

First, iTunes now displays your iPhone's battery status next to the phone's icon. Also, there's a new sub-menu that separates custom ringtones from the standard set.

Finally, you can select French, German or Italian as the default language and change the keyboard layout to English (UK), French, German or Italian. Go and get it, folks.

Moment of Truth: iPhone Software 1.1.1 is out

Earlier in the week, Apple's press release about how future software updates might well brick SIM-unlocked iPhones lit something of a fire - especially as the release stated "Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, later this week."

It's now later in the week, and the moment of truth for those who chose to unlock their SIMs, as the 152MB v1.1.1 update is now available via the iTunes Auto-Update. If you were one of the adventurous ones, the general consensus is to hold off from upgrading as the iPhone Dev Team have promised a re-locking tool within a week that should prevent your iPhone becoming an overpriced paperweight and allow you to enjoy the new iTunes Wi-Fi Store (and more) on your iPhone.

Tip of the Day

To get an instant map to any address, just go to your Address Book and right click on the address field of any one of your contacts and select "Map Of." The address will then be revealed in Google Maps on Safari. You can do the same if a data detector determines there is an address in an e-mail in Mail.
