iOS 8 Update Introduces the Convenient "Hey Siri" Feature

The new “Hey Siri” feature in iOS 8 is a double-edged sword for me. On one hand, it’s incredibly convenient, but on the other, it can be quite intrusive. Here’s why I have such mixed feelings about it.

When your iPhone is plugged in or your iPad is charging, you can simply call out “Hey Siri, set a timer for 3 minutes” and it will comply, reminding you when it’s time to remove your eggs from the stove.

This feature is not only useful for setting reminders but also for performing quick calculations, identifying songs, playing music, and providing directions—all without having to touch your device.

However, the convenience comes with a caveat. There have been numerous instances where Siri activated unexpectedly during phone conversations or in the middle of a meeting, offering to search the web based on what was being discussed. This can be somewhat amusing in casual settings but potentially problematic in professional or sensitive environments.

To avoid such mishaps, disabling “Hey Siri” is straightforward.

Simply disconnect your device from power, as the feature only works while the device is charging. Additionally, you can go to Settings > General > Siri > Voice Activation and switch it off. It would be more convenient if this setting were accessible directly from the Control Center—a change I suggest making through a feature request.

Despite its potential for awkward situations, I find myself frequently turning “Hey Siri” back on.
