With the release of iOS 18.5, Apple has expanded satellite connectivity to include all iPhone 13 models. Previously reserved for newer devices like the iPhone 14, 15, and 16, the feature now brings off-grid communication to a wider user base.
The update enables iPhone 13 users to access carrier-provided satellite services, adding a new layer of reliability when traditional cell signals are unavailable. This builds on Apple’s existing emergency satellite tools and opens the door for broader use of satellite-powered messaging.

How It Works and Who Supports It
These satellite features don’t replace Apple’s Emergency SOS but work alongside it. Instead of Apple being the only provider, participating carriers—such as T-Mobile, which partners with Starlink—offer network support by tapping into satellite constellations.
Apple confirmed the change in the iOS 18.5 release candidate notes, saying: “Support for carrier-provided satellite features is available on iPhone 13 (all models).” The update is expected to roll out publicly very soon.
This functionality has been available since iOS 18.3 for iPhone 14 and newer models, but Apple’s latest move extends it to an even larger audience.
Why the Feature Arrives Now
The iPhone 13 was originally rumored to support satellite technology back in 2021. Reports from that time, including those by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, suggested Apple had the hardware ready but lacked a service partner. Now, with Globalstar in place and other satellite networks expanding, Apple is finally flipping the switch.
Still, competition in the satellite space is heating up. Elon Musk’s Starlink has reportedly tried to slow Apple’s satellite expansion to strengthen its own position in the market.
A Step Toward the Future
Bringing satellite messaging to the iPhone 13 gives millions more users access to life-saving tools and alternative communication channels. With other carriers expected to join, this update represents a big step toward mainstream satellite connectivity—no longer limited to just the newest devices.
