Apple is working on major updates to its AirPods lineup. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that AirPods with built-in infrared (IR) cameras will debut in 2026. A redesigned and lighter AirPods Max is expected the following year.

These changes show Apple’s ongoing effort to turn its wearables into smarter, more advanced devices.

Camera Features Could Boost Visual Intelligence

The new AirPods may feature IR cameras that support spatial awareness and device interaction. These cameras could help users navigate more easily and may connect with Apple Vision Pro.

Apple might also use this technology to gather visual data while the iPhone stays in a pocket. That information could support Apple Intelligence features and improve real-time assistance.

According to Kuo, production could begin in 2026. Other reports suggest Apple may add heart rate tracking to future AirPods Pro using a new H3 chip.

Apple Plans a Lighter AirPods Max

The current AirPods Max weighs over 384 grams. Many users have asked for a more comfortable, lighter version.

Apple is now redesigning the over-ear headphones to address this issue. The updated model may enter production in 2027, possibly launching in time for the holiday season.

Earlier this year, Apple added lossless audio and personalized spatial sound to the USB-C version. However, the physical design has not changed since the original release.

Translation and More Could Follow

Rumors also suggest that AirPods may gain live translation features with iOS 19. Users could hear translated speech and reply through their iPhone’s speakers.

With these planned features, Apple continues to expand what AirPods can do. The company clearly sees a future where AirPods act as more than just audio devices—they become personal assistants for daily life.
