Apple is facing renewed political scrutiny after several U.S. senators urged the company to abandon plans to source memory chips from Chinese manufacturers. The request comes as the global AI boom continues to strain chip supplies and drive up demand for critical components.
According to the report, Apple has explored using Chinese-made memory chips for devices sold only in China. The company is seeking additional suppliers as the ongoing memory shortage affects manufacturers worldwide. However, lawmakers argue that the strategy could create long-term risks for both Apple and the United States.

Concerns Over Chinese Suppliers
The senators’ concerns focus on ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC). Apple has reportedly requested permission to purchase chips from CXMT and has previously bought, but not used, chips from YMTC. The lawmakers have asked Apple to commit by August 21 to avoiding both companies.
The letter follows a separate appeal from Micron, which also urged the U.S. government to reject Apple’s proposal. Together, the actions highlight growing debate over how technology companies should manage supply chains during the current chip shortage.
Potential Business Risks
Although Apple is not currently prohibited from purchasing chips from either supplier, the decision could carry significant consequences. The report notes that Apple could face increased regulatory scrutiny and additional pressure from the U.S. government if it moves forward with the plan.
Lawmakers also warned that qualifying Chinese memory chips for Apple products could make it easier to expand their use beyond China in the future. They argue that such a decision could influence the global memory market long after the current shortage ends.
Trade Talks Add Another Layer
The issue arrives as trade relations between the United States and China continue to evolve. According to the report, some observers believe the chip proposal could become part of broader discussions ahead of an expected meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
A Difficult Balance for Apple
Apple now faces the challenge of balancing supply chain needs with political and regulatory concerns. The company must secure enough memory chips to meet demand while maintaining strong relationships with governments in both major markets. As the AI-driven chip shortage continues, Apple’s sourcing decisions could have lasting effects on its business strategy and the broader technology industry.
