Apple is tightening its App Store age-rating requirements to improve child safety and comply with growing international regulations.

Starting November 16, 2026, developers will see additional content descriptors in App Store Connect.

These changes require developers to disclose whether their applications include location sharing, dating services, or romantic interactions.

Furthermore, Apple has established January 12, 2027, as the deadline for submitting the necessary information.

The move builds on Apple’s existing age-rating system, which began requiring more detailed developer disclosures in 2025.

Dating and Romantic Apps Face 18+ Ratings

Under the updated requirements, applications offering dating or relationship features will receive an 18+ age rating.

Importantly, the rule applies to interactions involving both real people and artificial intelligence chatbots.

Therefore, developers cannot avoid the requirement simply because their applications use AI-generated characters instead of human users.

Additionally, apps offering romantic conversations or relationship experiences must disclose those features.

The changes aim to help users and parents better understand the content available within applications.

Location-Sharing Apps Face Regional Restrictions

Apple is also introducing stricter age classifications for applications that allow users to share their locations.

However, these ratings will depend on local regulations rather than one worldwide standard.

For example, Brazil requires applications with shared-location features to carry an A16 age classification.

Nevertheless, developers of family-focused applications may qualify for exceptions.

Apps designed for parents and children can request a lower classification through Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

Consequently, developers must consider regional requirements when distributing applications internationally.

Developers Have Until January 12 to Comply

Apple has provided developers with several weeks to complete the updated declarations.

They can submit the required information when uploading an application update.

Alternatively, developers can modify their existing age-rating questionnaire through App Store Connect.

Therefore, applications do not necessarily need a software update solely to provide the new disclosures.

The requirements apply to developers whose applications include the affected features.

Apple Strengthens Its Child Safety Strategy

The latest changes follow Apple’s broader focus on child protection during its WWDC announcements.

The company introduced additional safety tools as part of its OS 27 software cycle.

Meanwhile, governments continue pushing technology companies to improve age-appropriate digital experiences.

Although parental controls cannot eliminate every risk, they provide families with additional ways to manage online activities.

Ultimately, Apple’s revised App Store requirements place greater responsibility on developers to disclose potentially sensitive features.

The January 2027 deadline marks another step toward clearer age classifications and stronger safeguards for younger users.
