Apple TV+ and screenwriter-producer Jonathan Tropper have signed a fresh multiyear exclusive agreement, their third in a row. The pact keeps Tropper, best known for launching the service’s early sci-fi series See, tied to Apple through at least 2028.

Hit show fuels the renewal

Importantly, Tropper’s suburban thriller Your Friends and Neighbors debuted on 11 April and quickly became Apple TV+’s most-watched new program. Season one will conclude on 30 May, yet Apple has already ordered a second batch of episodes thanks to “record global views,” according to programming chief Matt Cherniss.

Fresh stories on the slate

Meanwhile, the writer’s pipeline keeps growing. He is adapting Marissa Stapley’s novel Lucky into a limited series. In addition, an action-comedy called Matchbox—inspired by the classic toy cars—is in early development. Tropper is also scripting The Corsair Code, a sci-fi mystery film based on his own short story. Moreover, he continues work on a forthcoming Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm, showing Apple’s willingness to share top talent across Hollywood’s biggest franchises.

Why Apple needs Tropper

For Apple TV+, critical praise has come faster than mass viewership. Therefore, securing a proven hitmaker is strategic. Shorter gaps between seasons, plus a steady flow of spinoffs and merchandise, could lift subscriber numbers and open new revenue streams. According to Tropper, the partnership is “the single most creatively fulfilling collaboration” of his career—a clear sign that both sides expect even bigger stories ahead.
