Apple has officially rolled out watchOS 26, bringing a mix of bold design changes and advanced features to the Apple Watch lineup. The update was unveiled at Apple’s September 9, 2025 event, alongside the new iPhone 17 series .
The software introduces a fresh design language called Liquid Glass, new apps, and AI-driven tools. While the update is free for Apple Watch Series 6 and newer, some standout features only work on the latest hardware.

Liquid Glass Redesign
The most striking update is the Liquid Glass interface, a transparent, blurred style now seen across Apple platforms including iOS, iPadOS, and macOS Tahoe. On the Apple Watch, it modernizes the Control Center, Smart Stack, and notifications.
Some users may find the design futuristic, while others could see it as prioritizing looks over function—echoing the debates around Apple’s iOS 7 redesign .
Everyday Tools Get Smarter
Beyond the visual refresh, Apple has added small but practical improvements. The watch can now adjust volume based on background noise, and the Smart Stack offers more relevant suggestions, such as navigation aids while outdoors.
A long-requested Notes app finally arrives, allowing users to dictate quick memos or pin reminders directly on the wrist.
Apple Intelligence Arrives on the Wrist
Apple is extending its AI system, Apple Intelligence, to the Apple Watch through select features. Workout Buddy provides live coaching, milestone alerts, and playlist recommendations tailored to fitness history. However, it requires an Apple Watch Series 9 or newer paired with a compatible iPhone, limiting access for older models.
Other AI-powered tools include contextual replies in Messages and Live Translation, which allows real-time multilingual conversations .
New Gestures and Compatibility
A universal addition for all supported models is the wrist flick gesture, enabling users to dismiss alerts, silence timers, or end calls with a simple snap.
watchOS 26 supports Apple Watch Series 6 through Series 10, the second-generation Apple Watch SE, and both Ultra models. Still, the most advanced features remain locked to the newest devices.
