Apple’s iOS 26.2 developer beta adds a major change for users in Japan. They can now choose a third-party virtual assistant for the Side button. A long press can launch Google Gemini, Alexa, or another approved app.
Many believed this feature arrived because of new European rules. However, Apple confirmed it was built for Japan’s market only.

Why Japan Gets the Feature First
The update follows Japan’s Mobile Software Competition Act. The law pushes companies to give users more freedom with default apps. Because of this, Apple created a system that lets developers link their assistant directly to the Side button.
To use the feature, the iPhone must be located in Japan. The Apple Account region must also be set to Japan. These conditions block the feature in other markets, including the EU.
Apple’s documentation also notes that users expect an instant response when they long-press the button. Developers are encouraged to start audio sessions immediately to match that experience.
Assistants Users Can Pick
The change opens the door for several assistants. Users can switch from Siri to:
- Google Gemini
- Amazon Alexa
- Other third-party voice apps
These apps still lack Siri’s deep system access. Even so, direct Side button support makes them easier to reach.
Will This Expand Beyond Japan?
The EU has demanded more choice in default apps. Because of that, some expect this feature to arrive in Europe later. Apple has not confirmed any expansion, and there is no release window. For now, the update remains exclusive to Japan.
